Washington is my guess. Nabokov mentors Varlamov for a couple seasons.

Not a chance. TBL gets Nabby. Logic: next to STL, they were the most motivated to get their hands on Halak. Beats trading for Thomas.

We'll see. HF predicted Halak would bring back a godly return, Horton would be traded for a top 5 pick. Boy were we wrong. Anything can happen.

i really don't think he is going to want to step into a mentor position. i'm pretty sure he's going to want the starting job out right. seeing how he made it to the conference finals last year.

how much is vokoun?

I think A LOT of goalies in the free agent pool could end up in the K. Get more playing time along with a nice salary.

There just aren't enough teams looking for starters.

Sharks will re-sign Marleau and use whatever is left to sign a goalie who will cost less, such as Theodore, Turco or Mason, who will accept less and a shorter term contract to prove they are still capable #1 goalies.

He will try to go to a contender. I would guess Caps at first but wouldnt be surprised if he ended up in Philly.

I agree with you. I would also throw Atlanta and Ottawa in the mix of possibilities too. I bet either Washington or the KHL are the two leading options though.

At least under Bob Clarke.

Good, it kind of worried me reading these past few weeks that Nabokov might be brought back. Marleau > Nabokov imo, I'd much rather sign Patrick. Though, they are kind of weak on goaltending, I doubt Greiss can carry them..they should pick up a guy like Turco for one year or something

Toskala knows the way to San Jose. $1M on a one year deal.

One thing is for certain, he will not get the money he wants or expects. Tampa Bay makes sense, Atlanta makes sense, Philly does if he takes a massive pay cut. Most teams either already have a starter, or will want someone cheaper.

I'm more interested in what direction SJ goes in goal. That will have a lot to do with who wins the pacific division.

Wilson notes the salary cap was pivotal in letting Nabby go- I can't imagine Tim Thomas and his 5 million cap hit while change that. Wilson is doing exactly what he should, wait out the goalie market until one of Turco, Theodore, Ellis, Nittimaky or ideally Mason gets desperate and sign a 1A to play with Greiss and use Nabby's 5.375 on the defense or Marleau.

With that said, I am quite sad to see Nabby go, phenomenal guy, great goalie, and I sincerely hope to have him return as a goalie coach when he retires. I also hope he gets a solid deal that helps him become the all-time winningest european goalie in the NHL.

They should have kept Toskala.

I think this is pretty much dead on. Atlanta isn't going to pay 5 million for a goalie when they have Pavelec. Philly can't spend 5 mill due to cap space. San Jose can't for the same reason. Varlamov and Neuvirth are both going to be starters IMO, meaning Nabby won't get the term he wants (he has to go multi-year or face the dreaded 35+ clause). Tampa is the only team that can really spend on him, but they may try to get away with offering only 4 mill. It will be interesting to see if Philly tries to clear cap space for him.

Sharks aren't grossly over paying any single one player though. They are more overpaying many players by a mil or less. The sharks most hated contract for example is Huskins making 1.7 mil next year. I don't see us really having a contract which we need to dump that would make Thomas viable. Also I think the sharks are looking for a goalie for only 1-2 years due to the prospects we have. An Ellis signing would make more sense than trading for Thomas to me. Also if we wanted to pay a goalie $5mil we probably would have just resigned Nabby.
