Dreger: Savard is in play

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=325440

According to Darren Dreger, the Bruins might be willing to move Savard in a deal to fill out their defensive lines.

Flames fans, are we interested? Iggy's expressed interest in bringing Savvy back in the past, but with the long term extension (signed until he's 39), and a running total of 4 concussions on his resume now, is it a risk we'd be willing to take?

If so, who would you be willing to send?

I'm leaning towards passing. It might be nice to have a true playmaker in the immediate future, but the term of his new contract is just plain scary.

I'd say to first try and trade for Spezza. If not then if the price is cheap and the Flames can dump enough salary to the Bruins (Kotalik, Langkow might be too much) to compensate for taking on a risky player contract and health wise. If healthy then sure... a gamble though.

I was thinking Sarich to fill their defensive hole, but I see what you're saying.

I highly doubt that we'd be sending salary to Boston if we were acquiring Savard. It would probably cost us one of Gio or White, plus a prospect like Nemisz at least. The very least.

Maybe Sarich and Kotalik (6.6 roughly) for Savard (5.0 I think) and a pick...?

I could see White and a prospect, but I don't think it would have to be Nemisz. I could be wrong, the contract is front end loaded so maybe it's not as scary as I think it is.

I am not concerned if it is front or rear loaded as that is not the number that matters. The only number is the cap hit which is the average annual salary, that does not change.

I think this could be worth the risk of an aging and injury prone player to us. Savard is a good playmaker who I think is solid on faceoffs (at least as good as what we've currently got). But I think he's a lot more likely to go to the Leafs and reunite with Kessel, with Kaberle going the other way in some sort of package.

Given the way the salary cap keeps going up with the ceiling rising faster than pre-lockout, Toronto may not consider Savard's contract to be that big a deal.

That's what actually makes it more attractive. For a team that's just trying to get to the floor a contract that would only cost you $625,000 but would count as a 4+ million dollar cap hit is actually very attractive.

If he's not worth having on your team for 4 million, then you move him to a team that wants him purely for the dollar savings.

Bruins will be looking for a puck mover to replace Wideman, so something could perhaps be worked out with White as the centre piece going back. And with a cap hit of $4M, he'd be an excellent fit. But I doubt he wants to come out west or that the Bruins even move him.

Boston has a surplus in good centers and if they get Seguin that's 4 good Cs.

I have to think Savard would be more likely to be traded that Krejci and Bergeron's contract can be a good/bad thing depending on how you look at it.

According to the board Oracle, "Boston is desperate for offense not defense there is no chance in hell they move a center for a defenseman".

They probably wouldn't give Hagman or Kotalik a look. The market for wingers would have to be really thin.

With a 4M hit I don't think we're gambling too much. He can very well come back and put up 90pts, or ut of 50pts. Even at 50pts he is not grossly over paid, although still overpaid.

Once again it comes down to: can we move Langkow?

TRADE:
Regehr
for
Savard

Langkow
for
2nd NYI (via OTT and SJS)

SIGN:
White @ 3.25M for 1 year
Conroy @ 600k for 1 year
Sutter @ 550k for 3 years

LINES:
Hagman - Savard - Iginla
Dawes - Stajan - Bourque
Glenncross - Backlund - Kotalik
_______ - Conroy - Moss
Sutter
CAP: 29.58M

Bouwmeester - White
Gio - Sarich
Pardy - Staios
Kronwall
CAP: 18.33

Kipper
_______
CAP: 5.8M

CAP: 53.71M (just under 6M to sign 1 backup, 1 4th liner.)

-With some more moves on D, (ie Pardy) we could throw some money at Mitchell which I would love.
-Or we could even throw up to 4.5M at Frolov... or sign both Mitchell and Tanguay.

Savard's contract is very buyout friendly. It was front-loaded so that he can basically be bought out for nothing after the first 4 years. The last 3 years of his contract have him making a total of 2.5 million. We would NOT send salary, the B's wouldn't take it.

He'd be a great player to have, depending on the price the B's want. I'd be ok giving Reggie and maybe a prospect, but not much more.

They can sign FA wingers. There is really no offordable D that fit their needs on the market imo.

Actually his contract is not buyout friendly. You buy out that CAP hit, not the salary.

And he is also 35 after the 5M season, so he can not (at least there is no point in it) be bought out of the last 3, he would have to be bought out of the last 4.

Actually, you do buy out the remaining salary, because that's all that is owed to the player.

I thought it was that way too but CapGeek says otherwise....

Maybe it is just you pay out the salary, but have the CAP hit as the buyout #.

Boston is looking to pare salary, not add more salary. As such, the suggestion of Sarich and Kotalik would be immediately rejected.

I think Flames Fanatic is right in that the Bruins would likely want one of White or Giordano, although I think they would ask for Gio first. Then they'll seek a prospect like Nemisz to be included. So Giordano and Nemisz for Savard. It wouldn't be a terrible trade, although I'm not sure I would make such a move because the club cannot afford to deal another puck-moving defenceman.

The other question to ask is if Savard wants to come back to Calgary. According to the rumour, Savard would only waive his NTC if he was dealt to Detroit, Toronto, and Ottawa.

Savard has a 4 million dollar cap hit and it comes off the books if he retires before it's up. What's so scary about it?

If he doesn't retire and is putting up 30pts @ 4M

I'm not sure Calgary has enough value for the Bruins to make a trade involving Savard. His cap hit is very good and they'd be looking to clear salary, so Giordano would definitely need to be involved. Other than that I don't see much else that would keep Boston interested(possibly Rene Bourque). Keep in mind Boston still has 2 2nd round picks(#32 and 45) and Sutter would like to start his draft sooner than later
