I honestly don't see Volchenkov returning a package like this. I think his rights are going to go for a late pick, like a 6th or 7th rounder, or will have a pick swap, like turning Ottawa's 4th round pick into a 3rd.

I'm also pretty certain that a bargain can't be had. Volchie has to deal with the possibilities of declining health and slowing down a bit, it's this reason why he wants to get locked into a big money, longterm contract now. 4M wouldn't cut it in Ottawa and that was a stretch, even for him. $4.5 is the minimum he'll make I would say.

Umm, what? I read and write just fine, and Orpik makes less then 4m... so who's the one having trouble with comprehension?

Yeahthats what i mean. We may already have permission to talk with him. Otherwise it just doesnt make much sense to us to trade anything for him right now.

There hasn't been many. Paying that kind of money for a defensive defenseman in the cap era doesn't make much sense especially for one that has trouble staying healthy in the Leastern conference.

I'd be surprised if it was Bernie and a 4th, I think a 4th alone would do it.

Volchenkov is maybe the toughest player in the eastern conference when it comes to playoff style hockey.

He'd be a fan favorite in Vancouver, he is definelty in Ottawa and everybody in Ottawa loves the guy. He's regularly voted one of the toughest players in the east and one of the toughest to play against, he'd look great in a Vancouver uniform.

If the canucks get him, by this time next year, ask Luongo who his favourite player on the team is. Throughout his career he's bailed sens goalies out of tough spots. The guy spends the season covered in bruises. Tough as nails.

He's also the cleanest hard hitter in the league. Every once in a while the A-train pulls into the station and leaves an unsuspecting victim lying in his tracks. Doesn't go out of his way to hit but when he does...

He's loved in Ottawa and nobody is pissed that he's leaving town seeking more dollars than the team can afford. If anyone has earned a payday, its him - although I still think whoever signs him will end up overpaying.

He will - or should - be coveted by contending teams so I would think a 3rd for his rights is quite reasonable.

you know it's worth mentioning that the main problem with Ryan Johnson isn't that he's bad. It's that he's constantly hurt because he blocks a ton of shots.

Who knows if Volchenkov will be the same way.

Frankly, I've never seen anyone attempt shot blocks like RJ. The guy lunges his entire body out of position to try and block a shot.

That's because he's almost always *starting* from an out of position spot.

Bernier and a 4th makes sense if we're getting higher picks back as well. This makes even more sense when considering the widespread opinion that Gillis doesn't like trading for UFAs -- just make it a player for the UFA and picks instead.
