Gorton-Ellerby On The Block?

Ive also heard that the Panthers might trade defenseman Keaton Ellerby, the No. 10 pick from a few years ago who in limited action last season after the depatures of Dennis Seidenberg and Jordan Leopold showed hes not quite ready for the NHL yet. .

http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports...tinel+Blogs%29

Another Panthers First Round Bust and/or DeBoer must really hate him?

Depends on the return. I still think Ellerby will be a good defenseman. Plus I think he'll be able to contribute sometime this season.

Defensemen usually take longer to develop. I wouldn't give up on Ellerby just yet. Maybe Tallon wants a roster player in return for Ellerby since our top 4 is pretty much set with McCabe, Kuli, Ballard, Garrison and now Wideman somehow displacing one of those guys. Allen is here long-term and I can't imagine anyone taking his contract, so that doesn't leave much room for Ellerby to come in even after McCabe's deal expires.

Tell me that AFTER the draft and free agency. He hasn't even had a chance yet to do anything!

That is the dumbest thing ever. Trade him because he's not NHL ready? How about you wait until he's NHL ready, then play him? LOL. I really hope Gorten is wrong on this one. The explanation doesn't make much sense anyway.

I'm guessing he'd be going out in a package if he is dealt.

I could see him traded in a "fresh start" kind of deal. He hasn't developed fast enough for this organization, and probably hasn't gained much confidence from DeBoer.

Unless he's the defenseman Great8cam was mentioning that thought the organization was cheap and wanted out?

Good call.

I didn't put two and two together after reading this thread. But that makes sense as Great8 said it would be kind of surprising to us.

I wouldn't think we would get much for him though.

He'll most likely wind up getting plenty of call-ups this season. Lets at least wait till the trade deadline till we decide on shipping him out. As it is his value can't be very high anyway. I think he'll do just find. I just hope he plays with some physicality!

I think the point of the thread is that Gorten thinks he's hearing that Ellerby WON'T be here next season. Regardless of what we may like.

Well this is obviously speculation, cause he's talking about Ballard being moved as well. I'll believe it when it happens.

Maybe, but it kind of sounded like it was one of the top 6 d-men. And why would a young rookie think the org. is cheap and then have the guts to say it to someone? Seems odd.

Unless we misinterpreted "cheap". Could be he's bitter about the fact PDB wouldn't play him more than 3 minutes in any of those games.

I had heard more than one player thinks the organization is cheap and it pisses them off. Idk where or when I heard it but now that he brought it up it rang a bell.

No way it's Ellerby IMO, but I really don't know. Why would a rookie who has barely broken into the professional ranks be making an opinion known about the organization being cheap? Unless he was lowballed on his ELC, which I doubt.

And to whoever commented on "trade him because he's not ready quickly enough for the organization" comment, that philosophy is ridiculous. Look at Jakub Kindl with Detroit. He was a first rounder forever ago and they've given him all the time in the world to develop in the AHL. He will be challenging for a spot this fall. Now he had his share of bumps along the road but good teams develop their prospects with much more patience. Ellerby has played two seasons professionally which is really nothing. He's also still pretty thin and hasn't filled out to what he may become. Stupid to deal him because in the right situation, I think he'll be a solid defenseman.

Pretty positive what a friend told me a while ago was that it had to do with finances and the teams willingness to open up the wallet.

To be honest, the Panthers probably are cheap. We don't even spend to the cap.

I'm not debating that, it's just what this particular unnamed Panthers defenseman was complaining about as Great8Cam posted about yesterday.

Former player said no one left here with a good taste in their mouth when Cohen was owner.

Kind of doubt that. He hasn't been here long enough to form an opinion. My guesses in order 1.Allen-perhaps something to do with his treatment of his injury. 2.Ballard-he's been in enough Organizations that he should know a cheap one when he sees it. and lastly, a darkhorse, 3.McCabe-perhaps in his role as team captain he has seen some penny ante things done by Management behind the scenes.

PS-How any player could accuse this Organization of being cheap in recent years, millions of dollars spent on expansion of training facilities and a pretty high player payroll considering their performance, is beyond me. Cursed? Absolutely! Incompetent? Certainly! Nuts? Almost as Certain!!! Cheap? Not recently!!!
