Be Patient: Kaberle Sweepstakes Heating Up

Just as Leaf fans begin to get worked up about the team's inactivity in the face of big name transactions throughout the league, Damien Cox, as if on cue, seeks to soothe our nerves by letting Burke speak to us through him:

Quote:
Maple Leafs president/GM Brian Burke said Wednesday from Las Vegas that he already has “four concrete offers” on the table for the veteran blueliner, and that another eight teams have made initial inquiries.

“Once I get to L.A. for the draft, I expect things to heat up even more,” said Burke
Oh, oh are you mad about the draft and the Leafs lack of picks therein? Cox has that covered:

Quote:
Interestingly, Burke said he’s confident he could already get a first-rounder for Friday night’s draft, something in the bottom third of the first round, but wants different assets for Kaberle.
Burke, sorry I mean Cox, even goes as far to assure us that this time Burke isn't screwing around, he's going to take his time and find the best deal out there:

Quote:
The more moves that occur, the more openings are created in different places. Last week, Boston had Wideman and Anaheim had Niedermayer and the Hawks had Dustin Byfuglien and Brent Sopel. Now they don’t.

So Burke can afford to wait. Moreover, he may have to wait, possibly until after the free-agent season opens on July 1. By mid-July, he might have added one or two new assets, and other teams might have found they haven’t been able to get the defence help they need.

Many have criticized Burke for being overanxious in chasing down the Kessel deal. But he also showed enormous patience in waiting until Anaheim was willing to take the contracts of both Vesa Toskala and Jason Blake in the J.S. Giguere deal, and spent months negotiating with Calgary before landing Dion Phaneuf.

You have to know he’d love to make the Kaberle trade for big returns on Friday.

But he’s also willing to wait to play the one card he has to play.
I think what Burke, I mean Cox, is trying to say is relax, Burke will still get something big done............soon.

Please no. We've already traded too many of my favorite players.

I'd rather a proven talent in Kulemin over a pick.

Guess it comes to down how much other Gms like him.

If Byfuglien pulls Morin, 1st, 2nd and Reasoner....Kulemin should bring in bank.

I mean Kulemin is a big body with scoring power too.

Eager is still worth something as well, so is Sopel. Both guys do their jobs very well. It wasn't just Byfuglien.

I don't know about you, but from that last quotation box of yours, it seems it's possible that we'll be waiting for a few more weeks before a Kaberle trade occurs. It may be a tactic to temper expectations for the draft, but it is there nonetheless.

Iunno man...Eager is pretty busted. Sopel is still decent but @ 2.9 million I might almost choose Finger over him.

I was just trying to say that the market looks promising and high in demand this summer.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'm expecting that Burke will do a veteran for veteran swap, take on some extra salary and perhaps a prospect or a 2nd rounder as extra compensation for taking on the extra cap burden.

I think it gets done Friday nite. Thing is, Kaberle is worth something good plus a pick at least. I am thinking Burke may be saying that a pick isnt important, but deep down he wants one, not just because he wants his scouts active, but secretly from the heat of the Kessel deal he wants to redeem himself in someway but hitting a homerun, or in this case...a hat trick.

Sopel was the 4th d-man on a stanley cup winning team.

Don't be silly.. we can add in junk to up the return too lol.. I mean Sopel and Eager are "ok" but nothing special. That deal was 100% for Byfuglien

As an outsider, I never quite understood the buzz around Kaberle being traded at the draft this year. This year's UFA crop is pretty heavy in solid blueliners so if I was a GM, I'd likely want to wait and see if I could sign a UFA and avoid giving up anything of value in a trade. As a result, it wouldn't surprise me if GMs are purposely lowballing Burke now seeing if they can get him to give in (which would lend itself to Burke's comments today).

On the other side of the coin, it is pretty clear Burke wants the team to be better starting next season...not 2 - 3 years from now. So trading Kaberle (or even Kulemin) for a draft pick doesn't seem to make sense either (unless of course Burke would immediately turnaround and trade that pick elsewhere for a player).

I think Burke's best offers will come mid-to-late July when the dust has settled and some team who missed out on the UFAs they wanted realizes at that point that Kaberle is their best option. With that said...this is a bit risky for Burke since what if there is no desperate team at that point and demand dries up?

If Kulemin gets traded I will be pissed. Just sign the guy ****! He was our best forward last year.

Under almost any circumstance I'd rather keep him. If we can get him under contract there's zero reason in my mind to deal him.

He is good, but not 3M$ good. Not yet. Nik will have to learn that he can't manipulate management and try to fast track his salary.

If he isn't willing to be reasonable, it would suck, but you have to find him another home - otherwise, he'll just sit on the sidelines and we'll not have him on the ice, or have an asset for him.

It's his NTC, it only lifts for a short time starting at the draft

I'd rather have Kulemin than a crappy 1st rounder (would be a in the 25 overall range).

It lifts June 25 at the start of the draft and goes until August 15 to be exact.
