I think he would have been gone personally, I think Vancouver would have grabbed him. Anyway, he has size, can skate, decent skill set, comes from a hockey family, character, captain of his team..you can't ask much mre. If he turns into a top 4 D, shutdown guy..amazing! I don't know how many of you remember Mark Tinordi..but he was one intimidating player...who did everything for Minnesota...
I had considered Tinordi as a good grab for us a 27; for us to move up to get him is fine. Kid's already big as a house and hasn't filled out yet. And as a non-scout who doesn't see the propsects play much, as a default I like the bloodline too. You figure you are getting a guy with good work ethic and a guy who won't be too intimidated by the pressure of the NHL.

And for all those bemoaning the loss of the late 2nd pick, we do get Phoenix #4 pick so we do get one more lotto ticket to scratch. I'd like to see the success rate for picks at the bottom of round 2 but I cannot imagine it's much better than 1/4 to get a guy who has any kind of NHL career, and not THAT much better % rate vs a mid-fourth rounder.

I'd have been happy with a slider like McFarland at 27 but for all of the beeyotching about getting pushed around by Philly I'll gladly take a big-ass D with a very good chance of being an NHL player.

We didn't have a big strong D in the system, none that I can think of. By the way, Vancouver gave there pick away, pretty sure they wanted Tinordi so they let it go. One thing I do like is that Montreal has added a lot of character prospects in Schultz, Tinordi and Eller..they all have some edge to them..something you need come playoff time...
Nice post also

The league-wide stats are lousy, but not Montreal's. They're a top team when it comes to drafting NHL-caliber guys, in any round.

Everyone who is frustrated please just take a step back and look at our long range D nucleus after Gill, Spacek and Hamrlik are gone:

Markov
Gorges
Subban
O'Byrne
Tinordi

That's a fine nucleus that can be plugged by a good low cap defenceman in 2 to 3 years. Tinordi will be under entry level for 3 years and Subban has two years left on his. Adding to the D long term nucleus is logical when you consider the next 3 years. Talent versus the need and taking into account the best player available makes perfect sense to me.
What about Mac Bennett? Is he ahead of Tinordi as of now?

Don't hate the pick but i'm a little dissapointed, mostly because it seems like some other picks we've taken over the last few years and alot like O'byrne . I'll be honest though i've barely followed the draft prospects this year except for some of the guys in the top 10 so i'm off to get more info. I really like the fact that some of you are saying he is nasty and has a good 1st pass though!

Second goaltender drafted, and it isn't Calvin Pickard. Wow.

Considering our aging and injured D-men ,I think it's a very smart move

Plus he has leadership and seems to add size

Lots of surprises this draft to say the least. McIlrath drafted before Fowler and Gormley LOL and Visentin picked before Pickard. Interesting to say the least.

Agreed. We need to remember. In three years... Spacek Hammer and Gill will all be gone/useless. Our scoring core is signed on for 5 years. Priorities ppl!!!
