If theres a bright side to how the goaltending situation looks, it's that Tampa and San Jose both have their goaltenders leaving Turco and Mason unsigned. It's a simple pitch for the Flyers to make: Heres our offer, do you want a chance to compete with a playoff roster in front of you or not?
Getting one of those goalies would certainly turn my frown upside down. We could even just sign them and worry about the cap a little later and get a crappy return on one of our bigger contracts, I'd be okay with that.
We have to make a trade to get a goalie. We only have roughly $500,000 left in cap space. Preferably we trade Carle and sign Chris Mason with the cap space we have left. Although I'm pretty sure at this point we're going into the season with the dreaded Leighton-Boucher combo.
The weak goalie market has become weaker. And Biron's deal cements him as nothing but a backup at this point. Leighton was signed as a 1A, and now the Flyers can scoop up a cheap and somewhat aged No. 1, or deal for one of the young guns (Schneider, Quick, etc.).
It is only because you can go over the cap during the off-season and that there is still plenty of time for a trade that the Shelley signing doesn't have me start getting dressed to go pick up some new sheetrock right now.
How about saving Gags? Can he really be the one to go? The team is very heavy with defensemen and has not addressed additional scoring up front, so the Flyers are going to deal scoring and two-way play to make cap space? Hoping the Gagne-to-be-dealt-soon rumor is untrue.
