Could be a Scott Niedermayer type player. Pure offensive talent from the back end. Only problem is maturity issues, which is surprising, as NJ likes taking mature players.

I'd also rather he take the major junior route for developing as an offensive defenseman rather than the college ranks. All in all, could end up being our Duncan Keith, which gives me chills.

Seems like a good pick, apparantly is a big dude with a hard shot and good speed, only thing that I'm uneasy on is a quote from an interview he did regarding it being easy to get up for 40 or so games but not for another team on tuesday nights.....read into it, here's his prospect thread

If any team can straighten out his attitude issues, it's us. On pure skill, the sky is the limit for him. He's a good PP QB, and is very good on the breakout. I like this pick a lot.

Meh. Some guys don't get over their issues, no matter who is in your organization.

I'm ok with the pick.

Corrente was a bit of a nutter, wasn't he? Seemed to work himself out ok. As long as he's not Mike Danton crazy, we're fine.

I like what Lou is doing back there, we could have some very nice, big able puck movers in a couple years time back there.

Merrill, Gelinas, Urbom and Burlon.

I think his maturity issues are overblown. Lou clearly feels his skillset was worth the gamble.

Corrente hasn't really done anything yet...

Don't get me wrong, I understand the pick. He was mid-level 1st round talent. But those issues and comments about playing useless games and being the only guy to turn up in gym clothes for the draft, just irk me.

Maybe I am overblowing the issues. Just don't like the pick and I'm usually always impartial to our picks.

He hasn't done anything isn't the point, he seems more mature now, is the point.

If he messes up Lou will crack the whip or trade him out of town.

I was silently hoping for Pickard because I have doubts that Jeff Frazee will ever put on a New Jersey Devils jersey. However, Merrill seems like an extremely talented player. Hopefully NJ can pull a diamond out of the 2nd round like Nashville did when they took Shea Weber.

We would be saying the same thing of any name with the #38 pick....

But Merrill is a good pick, no doubt. But not better than of other available ones at that point. It's really an unknown right now.

He's a mid first round talent that we got with a second. Even if we had our original first round pick, it would not have been a reach to take him at that spot. He is an elite talent at a position where we needed elite talent in the system. Lots to like about this pick.

I'm confused by the conflicting information:

If he's supposed to be so smart, and such a cerebral player, how do you (as TSN says) completely bomb your combine interviews, and WTH does one say to completely bomb your combine interviews? Do you tell the scouts to fetch you a soda and make it snappy? I'd love to have the missing inside color on what TSN meant by that.

I'd also love to know what "off ice conduct" got him suspended. Could it have anything to do with him listing Dazed and Confused as his favorite movie?

The guy is what, 17 or 18? He has a lot of room to mature.

I'd be worried about him being a nutter, but if Conte or Lou talked to him, I trust their judgment.

You have to remember that these guys are kids. 17, 18 years old. Lots of them still have some growing up to do.

I'm sure many of us weren't fully mature at that age.

He made comments about not seeing the point in Tuesday games against crappy teams in the OHL. Basically people said, what would he say if a GM asked him about Tuesday games against the bottom feeders.

I'm still lolling at his dress down. Dude might think he's making a statement there.

Agreed. I wonder what the off-ice immaturity issue was. Underage drinking? Weed? Who knows? Clearly our top notch drafting staff doesn't think it's much of an issue.

And everything else I've heard about this guy says he should have been taken in the top 20 picks. He has the exact attributes that we are looking for in a defenceman. I'm happy that Lou appears to have taken another potential steal. Now let's develop him properly.

We have Stevens as our roving defenseman development coach... that should help.

McKenzie's rankings said that his issues were related to screwing around in school/social settings.

The horror.
