Buffalo Sabres 7th Round Pick (208th Overall) LW, Riley Boychuk

Height: 6'5
League: WHL
Team: Portland Winterhawks

Went undrafted last year.

4. Riley Boychuk, RW – Portland Winter Hawks (WHL): As a strapping young lad from B.C., it’s not hard to predict who Riley Boychuk models his game after.

“Bertuzzi in his prime,” he said. “I like bumping and grinding out there.”

Unfortunately for the Winter Hawks power forward, much of the grinding in his junior career to date has been performed on his hip bones.

Boychuk has undergone surgeries on both sides to correct a ball-and-socket problem, which limited him to just six games as a rookie last season. Being on the shelf for so long obviously wasn’t a lot of fun.

“I’ve played hockey all my life,” Boychuk noted. “I’m not used to watching it.”

He's a second year eligible, but having missed almost his entire 16 year old season with dual hip surgery, you have to give this guy some slack. Huge winger plays a rugged game and has some decent hands in close. Excellent fighter also. Skating needs work, but it did improve some this season.

If nothing else, he can play a regular shift and fight at the WHL level. They haven't had a guy like that in... well... I'll have to think about that. Gaustad?

That was the first thing I thought of as well. But no, he's not.

It's like the Madden name generator on this guy.

Riley Sheahan? No.
Johnny Boychuk? No.

But we've got Riley Boychuk!

Considering he went undrafted last year, is he AHL eligible this year?

I don't think that has any affect on the eligibility requirements. It matters when you were drafted. Since he played in the CHL before, he is required to adhere to those rules. If he had played in the NCAA or Europe, gotten drafted, THEN played in the CHL, he would be eligible to play in the AHL at any time.

Great pick up. He's definitely a long term project. With a few years of seasoning I can see him as a good checking line player with above average offensive numbers that will stand up for his teammates.

It all comes back to when is his birthday.

Feb 20 1991 birthday for Boychuk = 1 more year of Jr play.

Which will be good for him. Portland should be a powerhouse this season.

Eight. See the post above. Plus Brett Ponich (2nd 2009), Ty Rattie (likely a 1st in 2011), Joe Morrow (possible 2nd/3rd in 2011) and Derek Pouliot (possible 1st/2nd in 2012).

I can see Boychuk on the 2nd line this season, 3rd at the worst. He should have plenty of ice time and hopefully be used in a scoring role. Guy's hands aren't too bad at all.

Good to hear, good to hear. Having a guy who can play the body, throw the mitts, and pot some goals is a tidy find in the 7th round. I'm eager to see him live next week at the Development Camp.

Riley Boychuk / LW('91): He's a second year eligible, but having missed almost his entire 16 year old season with dual hip surgery, you have to give this guy some slack. Huge winger plays a rugged game and has some decent hands in close. Excellent fighter also. Skating needs work, but it did improve some this season. I'd really argue hard to grabbing this guy with a 6th/7th round pick and seeing where he is in two years.

Mac Carruth / G: There's a lot of raw talent and quickness here, but he really struggled to adjust to major junior and didn't play with much confidence. Technically raw. Doesn't have great footwork or angles. Wouldn't be a draft for me, but I could see some time liking the size and raw quickness enough to extend a camp invite.

Good find, I'd missed that on Remmerde's blog.
