Seriously. Stop messing with the core Slats. Just give him his damn money, they are probably separated by something silly like 500K and sather is going to hold out like an idiot again.
It would NEVER hinge on $500K, it's hinging on the number of years (term)... Marc knows he'll get a bigger payday the sooner he hits free agency... Sather wants to lock him into a longer term deal so we can save some $$$ in those later years....
As important as this situation is, and you have to belive it will get done soon with respectful negotiation from both parties.
I really, and I mean really hope Sather or whoever is GM at the end of this up coming contract does the right thing before Marc hits UFA. Which is show the man some respect and offer him a "can't turn it down" contract before July 1st, 201? That will keep him in blue for the rest of his career.
I don't care if he never is an ideal #1 d-man, hopefully he does, for our sake, but even if he is a solid 1b D-man, to have moved up in the draft to get him, brought him along at a pace he was comfortable in to succeed, and if he put's in the effort and shows a willingness to make this team his own. Then give him every reason to stay and become one of the all time NYR greats, even if (in some posters eye's) he isn't an NHL all time great.
**Edit** Of corse that's all a moot point if he signs a 17 yr deal this year.
(Update) A second NHL source has confirmed that progress has been made between the sides, though there’s no timetable for actually coming to an agreement. Source wouldn’t rule out a deal getting done tonight but also wouldn’t rule out it taking another week or so.
