Nr 5 defenseman?

Assuming top4 to be: Pronger+Timonen+Carle+Coburn and the sixth guy on depth chart gonna be Bartulis. Also the seventh guy most likely will be an AHLer.

Who'd be the perfect fit for the #5 guy role?

My own opinion: Toni Lydman (UFA from Buffalo, 2.9mil hit over last four seasons).

It's been said Sabres gonna keep either of Lydman or Tallinder and let the other one walk. I'm really sure his hit gonna be lower than it's been.

I want Aaron Ward. He'd be cheap.

I wouldn't mind offering Koistinen an incredibly cheap contract for depth, dump Cote (if #7). I think he has has it in him to hold down a #5-6 position.

Others I would consider on cheap contracts

Aaron Ward
Tallinder
Lydman
Kim Johnsson (if he still exists)
Brett Clark
Lebda/Lilja
Sutton
Eaton

I think Derek Morris could be an option. With the Hamhuis trade Holmgren showed that he doesn't want a traditional #5, he wants someone who can eat minutes. Furthermore, at the '09 deadline have been many rumours about the Flyers trying to aquire him.

Price of #5 dmen will depend on price of our #1 goalie.

Still very much interested in Shaone Morrisonn.

Koistinen is very bad defensively though.

I'd actually be curious what Michalek wants, maybe Lydman, Eaton, Leopold, Colaiacovo, or Mottau.

Cote's bad at everything. I think holding onto an extra D would be more worthwhile.

On another note, I really wish we could have somehow got Seidenberg.

Maybe not as the number 5, but I want Volchenkov and don't mind spening the money/assets to get him. Our D would be NASTY, and we can still find a goalie for a reasonable price. I may be in the minority, but I would have NO problem with Homer going in this direction.

Pronger - Carle
Timonen - Volchenkov/Coburn
Coburn/Volchenkov - Bartulis

G = Mason

If you're in the minority, I'm right there with you. Our D is good but I'm a big fan of bringing in guys that other teams dislike playing against.

Won't work. You'll be a bit over unless Volchenkov (5.00), Coburn (3.00), and Mason (3.00) all drop about a mil each.

The asset that I was referring to would be someone like Hartnell being shipped out. This wouldnt be our only move....

I would LOVE to somehow ship out Hartnell and have Blake Wheeler or Ladd (or Downie ) become his replacement.

Paul Mara would be my choice.

Michalek, Volchenkov would be too expensive.

Lydman would be good too

Ward is done, His age caught up fast.

I want John Scott, not that great a player but would be fun to have. Realistic options:

Mara -depends on health
Eaton
Jones- on the cheap, you know Shooter keeps the good ole boy club close to heart.
Vandermeer- see above, on the cheap
Eminger
Witt- if he is a buy out casualty

Depending on price( i think if they are patient they can find someoen cheap at the end of the summer to fill htat role to a tee) they may let Bartulis, Syvret and the rest of the cast battle it out in camp and let them play for a few months a slong as they are not getting burnt often. Then acquire soemoen in Jan or trade deadline.

If we ship out Hartnell our forwards begin to look tiny.

Actually no, A-Train has a pretty clean record.

I wish we could get Michalek but I think he'll be able to get at least 4 mil. in free agency. Of course that is what some were predicting Hamhuis was offered, and it could be done, but the cap would be pretty tight. It would significantly limit what the team could spend on a goalie if the rest of the team (minus Leighton, Asham, and Cote) were to stay intact.

I think we have to move on from the idea that any of our NTC/NMCs will move. Homer has asked several of them to waive within the last year, they all declined.

Volchenkov hits tons, but we can't afford him. Ruslan Salei is a comparable style player (solid hitter) who might be available cheap.

I think the Flyers are looking at Michalek, but I'd be happy with Jurcina or Morrissonn too. There is mention of Tallinder or Lydman too. Tallinder would be a good partner for Oskars - not physical but they could defend on the PK and take pressure off the top pairs.

No, because I want more size there.

Eaton is a finesse defensive D, like Bartulis. Morris is a faded offensive D, which we don't need.

We need a defensive Dman with some size who can pair with Oskars against other teams top lines and PP units.

I'm not sure how much he'll get, he has a really low profile.
