Lou's comments about the goaltending picks are interesting:

Quote:
You got two goaltenders that you liked?
“Yes. Well, you depend upon your scouts here. The only place I’ve seen both of them is on film.”

So, the scouting staff liked both?
“Yes.”
I guess there's a trusted scout somewhere on the staff who staked his reputation on Wedgewood working out, because it sounds like Lou didn't know much about him.

I don't think Lou is ever personally responsible for scouting goaltenders. He delegates that task.

Edit: I mean more than he delegates most scouting. Truthfully, I think Lou makes the final decisions only in the first round (or two maybe) and even then Conte is probably responsible for much of it.

Right, but I'm still thinking about why we made such a reach with that pick for a goalie ranked so low. Clearly someone told Lou and/or Conte, "Trust me, take this kid. He's going to be good." And Lou followed that guy's hunch.

In any case, I'm glad we scouted him beyond just seeing the one great performance everyone mentions when his name comes up. I trust our scouts, and I said before that I would be fine with this pick if they actually had scouted him and saw something they liked, and that was the reason they took him.

Who scouted Marty? I hope it wasn't the same guy who scouted JFD or perhaps Claremont also

I know it's a crap shoot, but taking these 2 kids is a glimmer of hope for the future in net. Not an heir, just a good solid keeper would be nice.

We'll see what Wedgewood is made of next year I suppose. I hope he's good, just because I kind of like the name.

I don't think you should draft two goalies. especially when they're ranked 18-19 in the book but then you pick them a hundred or so picks apart. it's just, kinda weird.

I guess they felt like they were playing with house money.

GMs often know nothing about the players picked.

Once again, I struggle to see the relevance of CSS rankings in assessing the Devils' picks. That's one aggregate opinion. Every scout will have a different list, especially when it comes to players from the third round onward.

I dont know why we are even drafting goalies, we all know Anthony will take over the reigns in a few seasons.

We are going to turn our team into a monarchy.

Wedge Antilles is a ready made and awesome nickname for him.

Very true. Wedgewood was ranked higher in a couple other publications. Just because CSS or any scouting publication doesn't have a player ranked high, doesn't mean he is going to not pan out. And being a back-up goalie behind a workhorse number one, I don't think it's really easy to get an accurate ranking on Wedgewood with his limited activity. Time will of course tell if he was worth the pick.

Picking goalies is a crapshoot anyway, it's very difficult to predict a goalie's development curve. I just wonder if we could have held off on picking Wedgewood until the fourth round, and gotten another BPA pick in the third round. Then again, I don't know where other teams had Wedgewood ranked. He might have been gone by the fourth round.

70 saves on 73 shots against Windsor from a 17 year old is very impressive. And the fact that the performance came in an elimination games says something about the kids big game ability.

If you read that blog site many in the OHL circles are comparing his situation to that of Steve Mason where he came from nowhere as a backup to starter.

I know they're not saying he will necessarily turn into Mason, merely that it has been done before, but I don't know if that is a good comparable. Hopefully Wedgewood will follow the same path. He still has to win the starter's job for Plymouth next season, it isn't automatically his.

Thing i like about him is he is 17 he wont touch pro hockey for another 3 or 4 years then prob. see the AHL.

Like someone said drafting goalies is a crap shoot but this kid at 17 is a good gamble i think.

Heres to hoping he gets that starter spot and holds it for 3 years thats a lot of work and would really progress him i believe.

This is the Devils convo with Wedgewood. The kid's a keeper IMO. I would say he has the best potential out of all of our draft picks from this year.
