Kotalik on Waivers

Leafs fan here.

I was just listening to Leafs Lunch on AM 640, and Bob McKenzie said the flames have put Alex Kotalik on waivers.

Cheers

What a brutal trade they made with the Rangers.

This means:

1. They will try to get a bite on reentry down the line.
2. They plan to buy him out at a whopping 4M spread over 4 years in order to get some cap space; 2M in cap space this coming season.

What a complete botch by Sutter.

Yeah, that's what Bob said...he said the flames are likely to buy him out..I believe Bob's quote was

"you know when the waiver price is $125 that they are going to be bought out"

SDo he traded Lombardi, Prust, Gormley, Jokinen, Vandermeer and Prust again to return Higgins and Kotalik(Buyout). It is beyond me that this guy stills has a job

Wow,

Some people just do not get it. At the time of the trade, a 1st round pick and a 3rd line centre for the coveted top-line centre the Flames had always wanted was a no brainer. No-one could have predicted that Jokinen in Calgary would bust.

I would agree, though, I would have kept Jokinen the rest of the season and utilized the cap more efficiently.

This move to put Kotalik on waivers is bewildering. To me this indicates that Sutter is up to something, and needs cap space to do it.

I can't say that I'm surprised that Kotalik got put on waivers, but after hearing Sutter talk about him lately it seemed like he expected to keep him on the club. I REALLY hope it means he's up to something and needs to free up some cap space!

Waivers, likely for buyout purposes: Cheechoo, Ott; Nokelainen, Vandermeer, Phx; Koistinen, Fla; Kotalik, Cgy.

It means change is occuring, its not like we needed the capspace if we were going to stand pat.

It means Sutter is going for a FA and needs the space and if he doesn't get the FA, he'll pull Kotalik back up since I doubt anyone else will claim him.

I would like to put a claim on Koistinen though honestly. Hes a good puck mover.

I'm willing to bet Kotalik isn't bought out. That just doesn't make sense, and Sutter has no history of buyouts.

The board is set, and Sutter has made his first move.

The thing I don't get is why trade a UFA for someone you're going to buyout.
wouldn't be better just to let Ollie walk?

I don't think he'll be bought out either.

Prob just a move to give us roster space or hope someone picks him up or even to keep him in the AHL.

Agreed with everything. However, after the way Olli played when he arrived, I'd have traded him in the offseason and signed Cammalleri.

I think Sutter might have a suitor for Kotalik but the team wanted to make sure they only had to pay half the salary. Putting him on waivers means the Flames will eat half the salary when recalled. It doesn't make sense to put him on waivers for buyout, costing you $4 million, when Kotalik has stated that if he doesn't bounce back this season he'll head off to Europe forgoing the final year of his contract, costing you only three million. It may save you some cap space, but you're going to burn that getting a player with similar skills anyways. There has to be more to this. I say look for a deal in the next couple of weeks with Kotalik being part of it.

Isn't Kotalik's contract with a NTC, not a NMC, so they could simply send him to the minors.

Exactly, at the time everyone was praising him. Sutter couldn't know how Jokinen would turn out.

Anyone notice another name on that list that Sutter managed to move?

PS. If Calgary's owners want to pay Kotalik in the minors for next year, that is another option: to bury him.

I agree was well. I would let him sit in the minors and hope he retires and signs in the KHL. Buyouts make no sense when you can let him sit in minors and not have to take the cap hit for double the length of the contract

$$$ could be an issue for the Flames owners as they are Business men.

In spite of rampant speculation, this isn’t necessarily the first step towards buying out the brooding winger. General manager Darryl Sutter made the exact move in the summer of 2008 with Marcus Nilson, Anders Eriksson and Rhett Warrener. Nilson ended up playing in Europe, Eriksson toiled in the minors and Warrener spent the entire season on the disabled list.
