My ESPN colleague EJ Hradek blogs that the Flyers also made a contract offer to Turco over the weekend, not just Nabokov. Answer was no.
I'm not a Marty "Jerco" fan...I'll pass. Nabakov and Mason and Thomas are probably the 3 goalies who despite their age still can handle alot of minutes although they will need to be pared down. Nabakov like Brodeur can't play 70 games a year again. That's why despite Leighton's disastrous performance in the finals he would be the ideal backup. He's a big man that can handle the mileage when need be he just has to refine his game which he capable of doing. Even though Boucher was intrumental in the Flyers success at the end of the year and starting the playoffs he unfortunately is the odd man out. Holmgren does however owe him big time for basically covering his butt...

I would think it boils down to contract, while Boucher was far from great, he did win a playoff series. Tough to ask for more then that out of your backup. Leighton would be a better option, but at what cost?

According to E.J. Hradek, the contract Homer offered to Turco was for 3 years and "roughly" $6M (he said it was a bit more -- so a little over $2M per season). Turco "politely declined" (no surprise, given the lowball salary figure) and expressed his interest in testing the market. Hradek thinks Turco's going to end up signing for something in the $3M range.
Turco I would like, as long as he isnt too pricey. He is a playoff goalie, and still put up decent stats on a dreadful Stars defense. (Robidas and rookies/nobodies)

At $2m/year for three years (that's the contract he was reportedly offered), I'd worship him.
You can't get that kind of talent for a better price.
It's a shame he didn't sign, but let's wait to see what happens when free agency opens.

I guess I cant complain if we got him for that price, but I still rather have Mason and Ellis...Guys that havent had consitently disappointing playoffs.

Turco hasn't had the greatest playoff career, but hes been better later in his career and has at least won a playoff series. All things considered I'm more worried about how much we pay then who we get.

That's what I'm thinking about the back-up situation. I see us having Boosh again for next year, if for no other reason than the fact that Leighton is looking to sign for more than $925k...and I just can't believe that Leighton doesn't think he can get more than that.

Have you even bothered looking at Turco's playoff stats in the last 2 years he made it?
06-07 GAA 1.30 SV% .952
08-09 GAA 2.08 SV% .922
Mason's best year (he has only played 2 years in POs) is still worse than both of those.

His career play-off save percentage is .914, and career GAA is 2.17. I think those #'s speak for themselves. The two years that his numbers sucked were far more a result of his team than him too.

2007 - 1.30 .952 - 7 games
2009 - 2.08 .922 - 18 games
If money were no object, Turco is probably the guy I'd take out of everyone, followed by Mason.

Turco remains my first choice. While I can't say that Nabokov is necessarily a lesser goalie than Turco, I think the difference in talent is far closer than some might suspect.
I think Turco's been under-appreciated due to his crappy team while Nabokov has been over-appreciated due to his contending team.
I want Turco. I'd be willing to go as high as $3.5m per for him, and I'm the guy who refuses to pay goalies more than $4.0m per.
