I'm getting the impression Hamhuis might be a problem case, not enough info, but something is going on there.

Wonder if Nichol and Hamhuis were buddies at all. Ellis too, might make a good reference

Theodore was amazing last season until the playoffs, he lead his team to the presidents trophy, you seem to dislike stats but how can you ignore a goalie going 37-7.

-ellis is not better, he got beat out of his job by a rookie, and only played 28 games posting mediocre stats in a defense-first system.

niity is definitely not better, biron inconsistent, leighton had pronger and probably wont repeat that year, hedberg is old and career backup- same with lalime.

Toskala probably deserves a spot, but with his recent stats I can see why someone would choose lalime over him. Its been two seasons since he even hit 90% saves.

UFA pool really isn't deep, without considering the tradable halak/vokoun types.

I completely understand where you're coming from, I just think Washington made Theodore better than what he really is. The guy folded in 2 straight playoffs and got yanked for a younger goalie. Heck he didn't even make a save the last game he played. I think he's a decent goalie behind a really really good team, Ala Philly, but so are a lot of the goalies in the UFA crop. That's what bothers me with his ranking.

Maybe I'm biased because I really like the goalies from the sharks system (kipper, tosk, nabby) and the hybrid style of goaltending, but I feel a lot of "average" to mediocre goalies play on really good teams and look good as a result of those teams. Meanwhile some goalies get fliced behind a bad defence and go further down the ranking system like Toskala.

My rank for who the sharks should consider:

Nabokov
Turco
Mason

Ellis
Toskala (healthy*)
Theodore
Biron
Nittymaki
Hedberg
Leighton

Also if you're looking for leverage only the ones in bold have played over 60 games since the lockout.

Griess barely has #2 potential let alone #1. Remember 2 seasons ago? he was so bad we had to go out and get Boucher.

Nabokov - he's already gone, he'll be in a Flyer jersey by Thursday
Turco - no
Mason - hit or miss with this one, but definitely not an upgrade over Nabokov
Ellis - traded to Montreal today
Toskala - NO
Theodore - no
Biron - Woudnt be a decent replacement
Nittymaki - same as Biron
Hedberg - no
Leighton - NO

I think Hamhuis has a team he wants to sign with in mind (probably Vancouver), and he's just being coy until July 1st. It's his first shot at UFA and if he gets the chance to go play near his family and have a solid Top-3 role on a good team, he's probably going to take it. And forget what other folks are offering.

You mean 07-08? Just his second year in North America? When he got all of 3 games played in the NHL? And was just 21 years old?

Yeah, that's a great thing to judge a player on.

Greiss definitely has the potential to be a #1, and a good one IMO.

2 years is a long time in a goalie's development.

Although Ellis does not yet have a new contract he immediately sent a message to his followers on Twitter, stating that he was thrilled to join the Canadiens.

"Very excited about the trade! It's an honor to be part of a team with such great tradition and passion! Hope we can figure something out!" (twitter.com/dellis39)

ouch....

maybe wait it out to see if Bernier will take over as the Kings number 1 and then pick up Quick. it could take the entire season to figure that one out.

the Sharks will need Chuck Norris as suggested or pull a MacGyver....cause i've seen Griess play (HE SUCKS)

I would try out Stalock/Greiss/Sateri during minicamp and throw our best offensive plays at them and see who can make the most saves. If they don't like what they see then we go after a FA netminder. We should screen them and see if they can work there way around it, set plays, trick plays, crazy off the defenseman goal trick plays. Winner gets to play half the season split with our 2nd best guy of the 3. This gives us more FA money for 1 capable defenseman.

I suggest something similar with someone cheap(toskala, biron if priced right, even lalime) just to compete with greiss/stalock/sateri in camp and the best goalie splits starts with the 2nd best goalie. If we sign one of those goalies around 1m it doesn't mean we can't waive them if they suck in camp. Also there has to be a few vets that'll come to camp on a trial basis as well.

Legace is another vet that's available that could come cheap.

I don't need a sure bet that the guy's going to be nearly as solid as nabby, I just need a vet to add competition to training camp- if you just have greiss and stalock battling each other what if they're both crap? Put a vet in there and he starts blowing greiss and stalock out of the water then you know the value of those two.

That could work but our gem may be hidden in our system already. I say we play a couple scrimmage games at game speed and intensity and see who can match the NHL game energy. I'm sure some one will come out with a ton of composure and 2 out of our 3 guys will make the team.

He gets better with starts. Watch him when he gets 4 or 5 in a row, then prognosticate from the pulpit. Realistically, he is either a starter or he goes back to Europe, but he will never know how good or bad he is until he is given a real chance. That real chance is not limited backup duty or mop up in a game that is long over.

Turco would just be a horrible decision. If they go that route they should have just kept nabby
