Modano not to be offered contract

http://stars.nhl.com/club/news.htm?i...id=DL|DAL|home

Quote:
The Dallas Stars have decided not to offer center Mike Modano a contract for the coming season.

“We have the upmost respect for Mike Modano,” Nieuwendyk said. “He will always be a huge part of this hockey club. He is a great teammate and a great person. Mike is the face of this franchise. That’s what makes this decision so hard.”

Nieuwendyk and his hockey staff have had many meetings internally over the last few months about the team, roster and identity – for now and moving forward. He has also met with Modano several times to discuss his future since the season ended.

“Mike is unclear on whether he will retire or not, and still may decide to play next season. After assessing our roster and where we need to go as a hockey team, we have decided to not offer Mike a contract and allow him to explore free agency on July 1. If Mike decides that he would like to play with another team, we support his wishes. That’s part of the reason behind the timing of this announcement; we wanted to be up-front with Mike and give him the option to explore playing for other clubs on July 1 if he chooses.”

Nieuwendyk feels that it is time for the Stars’ younger players to take on bigger roles in the forward lines.

“We have a good number of young guys who are hungry and ready for bigger roles on our team. That’s a big part of this decision. These players are ready to step up and play important minutes. We need them to continue their improvement and development if we are to get to where we want to be as a hockey club.”

I'm with Nieuwendyk on this one. Setting aside the Barch insanity for a moment.

Fairly smart PR move. This rips the band-aid off and puts the ball back in Modano's court. There won't be any uncertainty or back-and-forth once the UFA period hits.

They have nothing to do with each other. Different roles and all.

I come in peace - There has been some chatter on the Coyotes threads about Modano and Ribiero. Those guys always killed us in the past. Does Modano have anything left? And, there were rumors about Ribiero not being "Tippett's guy". Anything to that?
Cheers
Scott

Not really, no. Modano already coasts 70-80 percent of the time. If he plays one more year it might grow to 90 percent of the time. He's still got some skill, but he doesn't use it enough. He rarely ever practices which can't help him out with motivation and effort (he says it does), and it also can't look good to the rest of the team to see a player never practice during the season.

I never heard one thing about Ribiero and Tippett. However, all players are "Tippett's guy" because Tippett is the very definition of a player's coach. It will eventually catch up to him with his new team. None of that matters though since I highly doubt the Stars would trade Ribiero within the division, though with Nieuwendyk running the show one never can tell. Apparently degrees at Cornell do in fact grow on trees.

Too funny. I went to Hopkins. Back in the day Cornell was the great adversary on the lacrosse field. Thank you for the info.

The end of an era. This is truly sad, especially if he moves onto another team. Modano should never be anything other than a Star.

Modano speaks...

http://starsblog.dallasnews.com/arch...appointed.html

Quote:
``I was told a while back by different people that I would have the say of when I wanted to retire, and it obviously didn't happen that way,'' he said. ``I'm upset and disappointed with today. It's definitely not the way I pictured it happening.''

So what does not being offered a contract by the Stars have to do with Modano not having the ability to decide to retire or not?

The sendoff Modano received at the end of last season was touching, to say the least. But I don't recall any word from him that he was in fact retiring - it may have been one of the first signs that Dallas was moving on, and these were Mike Modano's last games.....in Dallas. Of course, most of us thought he was indeed retiring; turning 40, end of contract, skills deteriorated, etc. But there never was that confirmation from Mike himself, only indecision on his part. Which is understandable, since you can't really rush a decision such as this.

But Joe Nieuwendyk seems to have made that decision for him. Joe appears to think Krys Barch is a more integral piece of this Stars team than Mike Modano. Joe appears to think that a team on shaky financial grounds can afford to just give away its most popular and most marketable player, knowing full well he wants to keep playing and, unfortunately, may very well end up fighting AGAINST the Stars in the playoff race next year while wearing Sharks teal or Coyote crimson.

Sad day to be a Stars fan, at any rate. I will continue to cheer on not only the Dallas Stars, but also Mike Modano, regardless of what jersey he wears. Delusions of a Steve Yzerman- or Joe Sakic-style run with one team have come to a crashing halt, and it's time to accept the fact that Modano is no longer the face of the franchise.

All that remains is to see what, exactly, Joe plans to do now.

We're waiting.

I'm sorry, but that quote from Modano is so pathetic and self-pitying...

So he thinks he should've been allowed to act as GM for himself? Just keep punching his own ticket until he no longer felt like it? It doesn't work that way. If anyone told him that it did, shame on them.

Not the way he pictured it happening? How could he have possibly pictured a better ending of a career? 99.9% of professional athletes never even get a sliver of the love he got.

And again, Barch has nothing to do with this. It boils down to: do you want to see Benn on the PP next year? If yes, Modano needs to go. Wandell's also a better option at even strength. If Modano didn't want to be replaced by these guys he should've played better and tried harder.
