BTW, they're not bought out until tomorrow. LeBrun jumped the gun and even admits so on his twitter

Yes was just going to post a clarification, they technically won't be ``bought out'' until tomorrow once they clear waivers

Neither is the cap space created (usually why buyouts are done)... unless they are planning on signing someone. I don't think Edmonton considers themselves contenders this year. I don't know why they wouldn't keep a 3 and let them walk away. Or even make a deal. I think all 3 have some value.

They don't "need" the cap space this year and all those would walk and be off the cap completely at the end of the year.

Of course the running joke is that nobody wants to go to Edmonton, but perhaps their is a big fish who wants to be there? Any ideas?
I don't think this has anything to do with a big fish. The Oilers have too many forwards tied up in contracts (or had, removing 5 over the last two days helps).

I believe it is more of a removal of certain influences from the dressing room than to go after free agents.

imo, it was more about getting rid of contracts at the forward position and cleaning the slate for a fresh start...bring in some of the youth and Fraser from the 'Hawks for some 4th line toughness...can't get anything but better then last year

Ilya Kovalchuk. Book it

It wouldn't be a good idea though.

I guess that makes sense, but I have to think they could at least get a couple of picks or mid prospects in deals.

Obviously not. They offered all three up at the trade deadline and the draft. No takers, mostly because of their inflated salaries. Thus the buyouts now.

Moreau should find work next year, not so sure about the other two because they lack competitiveness.

Only other players and management know this, but it must be telling that they would rather buy these guys out than have them in that dressing room next year...

If they wanted to guarantee a tank next year, then you keep all 3.

There have been issues in the locker room for a few years now and it seems like Moreau is a guy who has been a part of these problems. Combine that with him being a terrible hockey player and I think this is a case of the Oilers not wanting to have him near the rest of the team anymore.

As for O'Sullivan and Nilsson, their lazy and uninspired play hasn't earned them any favours.

It's best to just cut ties with these guys. And if they had any value, than they would have been traded at the draft for picks.

Keep in mind that this is not only a cap move, this also likely saves the Oilers around 4-5 million dollars in real money.

From the sounds of things we have been dangling these players in front of the other 29 GMs and nobody was foolish enough to bite...

Lowe said the organization is turning away from Free Agency, in particular the big fish. Unless they have inside info on someone who has real interest in participating in the rebuild i think theyre out of that race.

I think O'sully/Nilsson could be the Matt Moulson's of next year.

Then offersheet Bobby Ryan for 5m and sign Kovalchuk at 9m

Kovalchuk-Spezza-Hemsky

Was Nillson a cancer though? Moreau was a poor captain, Sully was just overall pretty terrible on the Oilers whereas Nillson had flashes of brillliance that made me not mind him so much.

If POS picks up his attitude, he could be a really effective player again.

The guy was so depressed last year, it was ridiculous.

Nilsson's got incredible skill but has zero consistancy.

Ethan's just a shadow of his old self.

Nice moves!

I think you could be right with O'Sullivan. For whatever reason he never got it here, but his problems seem to be entirely mental. He seems to have huge confidence issues. But in the right situation with the right team he could definitely return to form.

But it was not going to happen here in Edmonton.

They are not opening up the space to do anything big. They have said they aren't looking to do that. They aren't in a position to go do that. They are cutting the dead weight and any locker room distractions from this team.

Is Moreau done or do Oiler fans think he can pull a regular shift on the fourth line for close to league minimum?

jeebus, Edmonton is blowing it up. 5 Forwards gone. They will be good dirt cheap signings somewhere. Especially O'Sullivan
