The 2011 UFA/RFA Class

Let me disclaimer this by saying that I am aware 2010 free agency hasn't even started yet. I am further aware that it is likely that most/all of the key players on this list will be re-signed by their respective teams well before they even sniff free agency.

That being said, I think when we take into account how weak this year's UFA class is, the likelihood is that some of the teams on the cusp, who are a dynamic player or two away from being true Stanley Cup champions, are looking towards next season as the time to invest a ton of their available cap dollars.

FYI, next season's UFA class includes:

Joe Thornton ---> re-signed 10/17: 3 Years, $21 Million
Alexander Semin
Mikko Koivu ---> re-signed 07/15: 7 Years, $47 Million
Brad Richards
Simon Gagne
Martin St. Louis ---> re-signed 07/01: 4 Years, $22 Million
Patrice Bergeron ---> re-signed 10/03: 3 Years, $15 Million
David Backes ---> re-signed 11/12: 5 Years, $22.5 Million
Brooks Laich
Ville Leino
Alexander Frolov

Zdeno Chara ---> re-signed 10/09: 7 Years, $45.5 Million
Andrei Markov
Tomas Kaberle
Christian Ehrhoff
Joni Pitkanen
Jan Hejda
Kevin Bieksa
Mark Giordano ---> re-signed 10/29: 5 Years, $20.1 Million

Ilya Bryzgalov
Tomas Vokoun
Jimmy Howard

I have also chosen not to include the key RFA's of the 2011 off-season in the above list, largely because RFA's of this calibre are re-signed ASAP, or are not realistic options for offer sheet poaching. Nonetheless, the RFA class includes:

Steven Stamkos
Zach Parise
Jeff Carter
Kyle Okposo
T.J Oshie
Dustin Byfuglien
Claude Giroux ---> re-signed 11/8: 3 Years, $11.25 Million

Drew Doughty
Shea Weber
Brent Seabrook
Zach Bogosian
Luke Schenn
Jack Johnson
Keith Yandle

Thus, my question to you gentlemen (and ladies) is threefold:

1. Do you think the presence of such a rich and dynamic UFA crop will affect the money some teams invest in this year's players?

2. Who do you think, of this group, will actually MAKE it to the market? What will trade deadline availability be?

3. Do you see any of those high-profile RFA's having trouble signing with their teams (for whatever reason, invent one), and thus, being realistic targets for trades/offer sheets?

Thanks for your patience with this admittedly list-heavy post!

Might be a pretty boring trade deadline as far as playoff rentals are concerned...

Richards, Vokoun & Kaberle?

You will probably be able to remove Doughty from that list by July 3rd.

Koivu has to be resigned by the Wild or else they will have a massive hole, it's not that he's an elite player, he's just that big of a player for the Wild....

Vokoun won't be part of the Panthers by the end of the year, I think he'll test UFA.... Bryzgalov will stay in Phoenix (if Phoenix still has a team by then ) as he's played his best hockey there....

I can see Gagne and Bergeron being the most likely to test UFA, though Bergeron might stick in Boston as they were loyal to him as he went through PCS for a year...

Out of the RFAs, I think the Kings will have some trouble with Johnson being resigned, other than that, Bogosian is the most likely to hold out as he'll probably want more money to stay in Atlanta...

Christian Ehrhoff would be a huge priority for the 'nucks so i doubt he will hit UFA status.

The status of next year UFA really has a bigger effect on trade deadline rentals than this year's UFA. Not many GM will worry about the season after because a few of them will be gone this year if their teams don't meet expectations.

I wish the Sharks can get ANY of those RFA defenseman. Sadly though, their teams would match any and all realistic offer sheets for them.

Are you sure LA will re-sign Doughty and not let him get poached away by division rivals like us?

Expect most if not all of those players to be scratched off that list by this time next year.

The top UFA forward on the move from that list imo is Martin St. Louis, he's finally going to go to a winner (which maybe he already does by the trading deadline). And maybe Brad Richards too.

Jeff Carter to me is the most interesting case. I think the only way it works in Philly is if he, Richards, and Briere each center their own line to maximize the talents of all three men. And that is a very expensive trio. But Richards is the last guy they would trade, Carter is too valuable to trade, and they can't trade Briere - his super playoff run not only makes him valuable to them, but it also guarantees he won't waive his NMC to leave for any other team in the league (he loves his teammates, they love him, and he appreciated how well the Philly media treated him this past year).

I pretty much agree with all your selections, except I think Backes and Leino will be resigned as well.

I highly doubt St. Louis lets Backes walk. If he doesn't have an terrible year I expect the blues to ink him long term and name him captain before the season is over.

The ownership issues will be taken care of here in the next few weeks, there is no way they'd let Bryz walk on us.

They don't have to resign him, they can just match the offer by the other teams.

Not that they wont be extended, but Voracek and Mason will be RFA's.

Signing Ehrhoff is certainly a priority of Vancouver's, especially with Bieksa and Salo coming off the books. Not a chance he moves on for nothing.

I also don't see a single one of those RFAs not being with their clubs next season, except a slim possibility of Jack Johnson being moved.

Well no one saw Kessel being moved either.
