Are we going to go through this every time a defenseman is signed? 'Cause if so, then it's going to be a long summer for everybody.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Brett Lebda signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

You know who else signed for less than Moreau? Rob Niedermayer in Buffalo. Funny that we got Moreau for chemistry with Pahlsson and a guy who has actually had chemistry with Pahlsson signed for less a week later.

And while everyone is all gung ho about getting a puck mover, and I would certainly love to have one, part of me thinks that our defensive problems go beyond that and a cheap, effective guy like Lebda wouldn't have hurt. Or, put another way, for the money, I'd take Lebda over Methot.

Jordan Leopold was the type of player I had hoped Howson would sign, at 3 million he would be considered expensive for the jackets but I'd have signed him over Moreau. If things go as I expect RJ will be on the third line anyway.

When you think about it, 3 Million could have easily been spent.

Moreau = 1.75
Boll = 700k right now, will possibly get more
Stralman = 650k right now, will possibly get more

There, let those 3 go, and spend your 3 million on what you need.

Niedermayer may be one of the few guys in the league more washed up then Moreau. We'd all be *****ing if he was here (and you would be too if he wasn't a former Duck.)

He hasn't signed with the Flyers yet because of the cap issues.

71 games 10 goals 12 assists 22 points $1.15 million pay/$1.15 million cap hit

76 games 9 goals 9 assists 18 points $1.75 million pay/ $2 million cap hit

Which one is washed up? Which one is overpaid?

Looks like the Sabres win that one... I still don't understand the Moreau pick up nor the total lack of any movement on our defense by Howson. Arniel is good but it appears Howson thinks he's god.. we will see.

And which one played on a first place team? Which one on a last place team? I wouldn't look just at points. The Devils were a very good team last year, and the Oilers were pathetic. Niedermayer is nowhere near the shutdown defender he used to be, and is often just floating around the ice nowadays. He's a very very average center. Moreau isn't the shutdown guy he used to be either. Money aside, it's not really much a difference anyway, I'd rather have Moreau. He's more physical, and has always shown the desire to stick up for his teammates something this team has lacked in recent years. Both guys are at the end of their careers, but IMO Moreau has more tread left on the tires and is a better fit on this team.

Howson had one job to do this offseason, fix the defense, and he couldn't get it done.

Its too bad money is entirely relevant for this team. Paying $600,000 more for a guy who is only, at best, marginally better, is poor cap management for a budget team. Especially when we're also going to be dumb enough to overpay Boll for his so-called physicality.

We already have a physical guy who gets overpaid for his "leadership." His name is Chris Clark. Did we need his clone?

Honestly, I think complaining about $600,000 on a contract is ridiculous for a team that will be nowhere near the cap. Do you honestly think ownership would not let Howson go $600,000 over their internal budget if they thought the move would help the team win?

Please explain why you think Niedermayer is better than Clark, or Moreau. What qualities would he bring that Clark or Moreau can't that makes him such a better fit? Honestly they are all pretty similar with the only difference being Clark and Moreau are more physical and younger. Whose even to say that he would have signed here at all, or for the same amount he took to play in Buffalo?

Either player would be in our bottom six. Would you rather have an aging veteran on his last legs floating around providing "so-called" leadership because he has won the cup? Or, a younger veteran who has been a captain, plays more physical, and is much more likely to stick up for his teammates. Their point production is basically identical, and neither are in the primes of their career.

The way I see it, it's essentially would you rather have a 20 point player in your bottom six that plays with an edge, or one that doesn't but has a "name."

I guess I just don't see how the Jackets would benefit more from having Rob Niedermayer for one year instead of Ethan Moreau for one year.

Boll doesn't have a contract yet, so lets wait before saying we overpaid to keep him.

Howson may indeed make a move to support our defense before the season begins but as of now what he is doing reminds me more of the Confederacy in late 1864 than the Union Blue for which the team represents.
