Let's not divert here... It is not about Nylander. Sather failed to replace him, that's the point. Let's see if he finds anyone to play with Gaborik and what would be the cost in terms of money and/or assets.

They also will go into the market needing an enforcer, for The Post reported on Twitter last night that Jody Shelley is on his way to free agency after rejecting Sather's lone offer of $825,000 as reported here yesterday.

Shelly DID NOT reject a 2 year offer, he is looking for a 2 year offer. I can't believe Sather would penny pinch with this guy.

I'd love to keep Shelley, but I've never seen the media and some fans exaggerate the impact the loss of a goon would have on the team like they are with Shelley. We can probably find another player like him as long as it's not Donald Brashear. He's really not very unique, and he just happened to find great chemistry with Prust and AA. I really hope we bring Prust back, though. EC would be nice as well. That being said, I do hope we bring back Shelley because I like him.

Yea...Avery & Voros both dropped them in that game against Philly. And I'm sure Prust would have also.

Dropping them is not the issue. The issue is do we have a physical presence that can serve as a deterrant. If Carcillo decides to wail away at Gaborik, do we have someone that's mean enough and strong enough to do the same to the other team's best player? That's the idea behind a goon. Yes, a big part of their job is just to fight other goons, but another major part is to be there as a constant reminder to the other team that our skill players are not sitting ducks.

good point just keep Brashear, hardy har har...............in all honesty if you want that then sign a cheap option like McGratton for 500K and play him only when there is a physical presence on the other team present

Could they not go out and get a guy to drop them who plays D?

I rather play the youth upfront

And then Sather will go and throw obscene amounts of money at a guy who's never played for the Rangers...

I can't stand Sather, I really can't...it's been time for him to go for the last 5-6 years. F HIM.

Yea, they could do that...but that's ignoring the other things Shelley did for us that went beyond just being a goon. Do those things make him worth 800-900K for 2 years? I don't know...I think maybe they do.

And personally, I don't like the thought of D being my goon. It's too important of a position to be short handed for 5 minutes or more at a time.

Rangers remain very interested in trying to work something out with Shelley. Will need to offer more than initial 1/825,000.

Previously Brooks wrote the Rangers offer to Shelley was two years. Now it's one year. Which is it?

IMHO, anybody who'd pay that guy a penny over the absolute minimum is out of their mind. Scary, but a total stiff.

He made $725,000 last season. The cap goes up and everyone wants their cut.

Sather is always bidding against himself. He throws $3mill at a useless Brashear & now is nickel & diming a guy who made his presnce known on the ice, on the bench & in the locker room.

There will be a team that gives Shelly what he is looking for.

Sorry, but the facts are Donald Brashear had alot more leverage than Jody Shelly, because of his rep. Brash would still be on the team if he didn't get injured.

I don't see why we have to overpay for Jody Shelly

Larry Brooks tweets that if Shelley doesn’t re-sign to expect the Rangers to be in on Derek Boogard of the Minnesota Wild

there we go!!!

Dubinsky will pay with Gaborik.

Tortorella moved him to wing because he wanted to give less responsibility to Dubinsky while he was learning to become more consistent.

But, he's going to be put back at center because he is an effective player at both ends of the rink, and Tortorella is going to want Dubinsky more involved.

I think collectively, we need to get passed this notion of am "elite" top line center.

We have capable centers in our organization.

Gaborik doesn't need an elite center. He needs a guy who can control the puck, give him time to get open, and someone he can pass to and vice versa.

Dubinsky and/or Anisimov are capable.

Not only that, but by giving them that opportunity, you save cap space to be used elsewhere, more specifically making this more then a one-line team.

Under a million. Not too bad. Would've rather seen him gone, however.
