Nobody is concerned with Clarkson's playoff performance? He was beyond invisible. He was flopping on the ice, taking bad penalties and looked a step behind everyone else. Man, I'm depressed about the $2.6. I was really hoping for $1.6.

agreed. But then again, what difference does a 1/3m really matter, to us and the cap for that matter?

IMO, Clarkson will be dealt someday. Too many teams love the guy that he will constantly be requested in trade proposals.

Why would you "hand it to N'Everson on this one"? Because he subscribes to Bob McKenzie's Twitter?

Again, as always, all he did was copy and paste other people's hard work and inside information.

We have 11 million dollars to sign 6 more players. Say Martin at 6-something bring us down to about 5 million for 5 players. So yeah something is moving.

Waiving Pandolfo would pay for this move, but I have to think Rolston and maybe Langenbrunner might be on the way out.

DDDDDDthis.

As improbable as it might seem it doesn't mean salary won't be subtracted.

I have a feeling that people will be moved if Kovy and Martin sign with us. I don't think Lou's going to move people "hoping" to sign certain players.

This does not prevent us in making other signings (re-signing Martin and keeping Kovy or bringing in another defensemen). The moves that have to made to do that would have had to be made even if Clarkson's cap hit was slightly lower. All this does is eat into the trade deadline cushion a little bit (by like a half a million).

Kinda hoping for ~2.2 but, 400k more isnt all that much. Lou loves Clarkie.

Just glad hes back. Hopefully no more injuries.

Pando gets some form of Brylin-treatment or similar for sure.

Paying someone to take Rolston will cost a 1st rounder or a decent prospect, but it's possible.

Langenbrunner? I doubt it. Simply because at roughly $2.5M it's not like he isnt playing up to his contract.

He gave up UFA years and that's key.
You're right. Cooke isn't as good of a comparable as I thought. Clarkson is clearly the superior player, and was paid accordingly. Now I hope he earns the contract in full. Knowing how Clarkson operates and his opinion of Lou, I'm sure he won't disappoint.

Almost certainly. But that was probably true even before this re-signing.

Not horrible, not great.

Look at the comparables.
Matt Cooke = $1.8m for 3 years.
Milan Lucic = $4.1m for 3 years.

average that would be $2.95m for 3 years.

How can you be depressed about signing Clarkson? If anything, I'd like a couple more just like him.

Let's not forget how great he looked coming out of camp. And then Injury followed by 4th line time and being misused pretty much held him back all year. He was ready to breakout.

Rolston's value isn't that bad. It cost us a first round pick to move Malakhov and he was "retired." Rolston is still playing and putting up 20 goals. He can get back a mid to late rounder. It won't cost us a draft pick. The problem in moving him is the no-trade.

Langenbrunner I am not sure will be moved. It depends on who else is signed and the cost.

Depressed may be hyperbolic...still pro-rated at 40 points, you've got Ladd, Fehr, Latendresse, Benn, all around 1M and change for cap hits. Perhaps I'm overweighting his playoffs.

You're right though, I'll save my depression for when the Devils roll out their defensive corps sans Martin.

His salary is 2 million the first year. The cap hit is the average of the contract. The contract is 2 the first, 3 the last two years. That averages to 2.66. That is what counts against the cap.

Exactly, I don't know why everyone expected $1.6, just because of his down year last year? Clarkson has talent, getting him for that would have been a steal. Lou generally overpays to retain his own UFA's (even Nieds and Holik once they got to UFA got more than fair offers), this is just sop. An extra $300-400k per year isn't going to break anyone's back.

Besides, we'll have loads of cap room to pay Clarkson when Kovy and Martin walk anyway

I wonder if Lou was afraid of an offer sheet coming along and that's why he got this done today?
I tried to make a similar case for Andy Greene's contract at the end of the season...it didn't get me anywhere and made me dye my hair earlier!
