Rod Brind'Amour is done with the Hurricanes

Rumors that he's retiring, as well as he isn't retiring but is being bought out. Regardless, it looks like his time is done with Carolina.

Well, he isn't being bought out. I think the deadline for buyouts was yesterday.

McKenize said today is the deadline to be but on waivers.

I wonder if Rod the Bod gets picked up as a 4th line guy by any contenders.

I'm so sorry to say this but he just has been bad for a couple of seasons now... I'd like to see him retire as a Cane but he'd need to do it now.

They are not able to buy him out as he signed a multi year deal over the age of 35.

Forced retirement sounds like the better word, Canes should be more careful than to let this stuff get out. Could get them in to trouble.

If he is still as good at faceoffs as I remember he would be worth being a 4th line center for a contender once waived or bought out by Carolina. He would be very expensive as a waiver claim even as re entry waivers.

That's incorrect. He can be bought out. The 35+ clause you are referencing just means the team is on the hook for the salary cap hit even if the player retires.

One of my favorite players of all time. His decline was disappointing to me, hard to believe 2-4 years ago he was over PPG player for a year.

GP G A PTS +/-
2009-10 Carolina NHL 80 9 10 19 -29
2008-09 Carolina NHL 80 16 35 51 -23
2007-08 Carolina NHL 59 19 32 51 0
2006-07 Carolina NHL 78 26 56 82 7
2005-06 Carolina NHL 78 31 39 70 8

can he still win faceoffs and skate back to the bench after winning a draw?

Retirement is the best of both worlds from a Canes business perspective. They would save his $3M in salary, but still have his cap hit on the books (as they are close to the floor). A buyout would save them $1M in salary, but again his cap hit would be on the books.

If I am Brind'Amour, I would not retire. Why throw away $2M or $3M? That is a lot of money no matter how much you make.

I'd be shocked if Brind'Amour held a press conference to say he did not plan to retire.

True, but it could be a situation where the team has decided to buy him out and after that he has decided to hang them up (rather than try and catch on with another team).

I knew that 5 year contract for such an old player was silly.

One of my favourites of all time. Wouldn't be upset if he's bought out and the Canucks bring him in as a 4th line C/Hodgson mentor.

Carcillo-Brind'Amour-Laperierre would be the ugliest line in NHL history.

Gee, what could cause such a ripped and muscular guy to grind to a halt at age 39 while guys like Lidstrom and Recchi can keep going? I mean, the Canes players always come back from horrible injuries really quickly, I would think they could keep a healthy well built guy playing well until 41 without hitting a brick wall in his career.

Whatever could have happened to him???

Rod the Bod is still as strong as ever and his endurance on the ice is basically second to none. He can still skate for hours without losing a step in his stride. However, he no longer has the speed required for today's game. Slow and steady is great for most things, but hockey isn't one of them in my opinion...
