Makes sense. Phoenix is the place to be if you want to turn it around

They were both bought out immediately after. Odd.

I assume it's Jim Vandermeer. Which is odd because that saves almost no money. I guess it adds a little something to the bottom pairing though. I don't see Aaron Johnson back now that this deal is done.

Weren't they both waived? Don't both teams have to put these guys on re-entry now?

Edm gets rid of a player they want and Phx gets rid of a player they want. They need fwds and Edm needs an experienced dman. Hopefully it works out for both teams.

1. Ah _ important update on O'Sullivan/Vandermeer: traded for each other but both players then bought out according to a source. Strange. less than 5 seconds ago via web

Lebrun confims the trade but says both players were bought out after this trade was done... I don't see what was the point of this trade unless the team with the bigger contract/longer contract got an asset in return

actually they dumped money. Vandermeer's buyout is just over 1.5M over 2 years. Just over 750k per season.

O'Sullivan's buyout is just under 800k over 2 years. 935k this season 398k next

Only way it makes sense is one guy had less of a cap hit so the hit against the teams cap would be reduced???

This. Coyotes are more concerned with total money being paid while Edmonton is focused on this years cap hit.

In what way? That it had appeared that O'Sullivan had been waived? Or are you questioning the point of exchanging those players?

I'd bite on the latter.

O'Sullivan has plenty of potential. He simply has yet to harness it. Phoenix is developing into a young, run 'n gun squad - not unlike Edmonton, I suppose...) - and could well see a resurgence while in the desert. He's overpaid based on his performance as an Oiler, but if he's in the right situation I can see this paying off for the 'Yotes.

Vandermeer is a hard-nosed, reliable defensive defenseman who has grit as his primary currency. The Oilers have young dmen like Gilbert, Smid, Peckham and Chorney... maybe Johnson, who'd benefit from a stabilizing force with them. The problem might be that he takes a spot that could otherwise be reserved FOR Johnson.

Having said that, I'm now thinking of another problem. IIRC, Vandermeer was the guy who, as a Flame, jumped at the opp to drop the gloves with the Oilers' reigning Lady Byng candidate and peace activist, Marc Pouliot (now waived). There wasn't much grit to that.

Wouldn't the Oilers be paying more for the buyout overall? Maybe they get an extra piece in the deal? The cap hit would be less next year according to cap geek.

Isn't there a clause in the CBA that you can't re-sign players that you buy out? If so, maybe the teams want to get their guys back at new contracts for lower salaries, so they trade them for someone else to buy them out. Then they can sign them again, right?
