I always loved the Bisons Logo, its a great Hockey Jersey Logo. Brock came to UNB last year and featured that new "B" Logo on their Jerseys I thought it was weird cause in 2008 at the CIS Nationals in Moncton they had the same uniforms but with the actual Badger Logo.
When did U of Calgary get rid of their uniforms with the actual Dinos word with the Dinosaur behind it, and change to the Detroit Red Wings uniforms with simply a boring print of the word Dinos, with their Jersey Numbers on the Front? These uniforms leave alot to be desired compared to their old ones, and look like something a Peewee House League Team would have worn in the early 90's.

I think this is the 3rd year for the new U of C look. I prefer logos to words on jerseys, myself.
As of this post there are 2 goalies, 11 defencemen, and 20 forwards. I suspect that loads of those will be re-assigned to Victoria or released in the near future because the bulk of the team has yet to be re-assigned from Vancouver.
I suspect that the line-up to face the Bisons will include for sure any player on that list who has not yet been dispatched and was not in the AHL last year, and then the roster will be filled with players returning from the AHL last year. For a lot of guys the game may decide whether they get an AHL job, an ECHL job, or nothing at all.
It will be interesting to compare the "Moose Prospects" roster facing the Bisons to the Victoria Salmon Kings roster that faces UBC.
The Game Preview has been updated and includes a downloadable and printable Line-Up Card (pdf). The Moose line-up includes 6 players who played some games for the team last year, including defencemen Ryan McGinnis, Taylor Ellington and Geoff Waugh, and forwards Evan Rankin, Andy Brandt and Derek Leblanc.
My two favourite teams played a very entertaining game on Wednesday night. The play started at a very fast pace with hard hits and several good scoring chances. The first period was mostly in favour of the Moose (they held a 14-6 shots edge) unless the Hellyer-Walker-Duval line was on for the Bisons. Aaron Lewadniuk, a former Wheat King, scored for the Moose on a scramble at 1:44. However, Jared Walker (who had a very strong game) leveled the score at 12:55. He came down the left wing and when the Bisons shifted to the right so too did the Moose D, leaving Walker a clean shot at the top shelf.
The Bisons slowly assumed control of the game during the second period. They seemed to have the jump on the Moose and this forced several penalties. However, on one such penalty the Moose scored on one of their two breakaway opportunities caused by the Bisons getting too fancy in the neutral zone. Evan Rankin cashed his breakaway opportunity at 15:31. The Bison surge allowed them to be outshot only 13-12 over the period.
The final period produced no goals. But the Bisons generated several good chances. They seemed to be better conditioned than the Moose. They were both stronger and faster than the Moose at game's end. The Bisons held a 12-9 edge in shots but Daniel Belissimo held the Bisons at bay.
Here's how the teams line up:
MANITOBA BISONS
Goal:
Christie (Caligiuri)
Defence:
Erb - D Crowley
Mealy - Flynn
Rumsey - Schappert - Tully (an extra d-man was dressed)
The Moose play Abbotsford at the MTS Centre Friday at 7:30 and then in Portage la Prairie Saturday at 7:30.
As an aside, the Canada West coaches' poll (reported in The Winnipeg Sun and at the Canada West Site) placed the Bisons 2nd, just behind the Evil Monkeys and just ahead of the Banjo-Mutts. Lethbridge, Calgary, Regina, and UBC followed in that order. Manitoba and Alberta each had 3 1st place votes, the other going to Sask.

Mike Sirant on why Manitoba boys love playing in the 'Peg (all of Sirant's 2010-11 recruits hail from Winnipeg) - "We have an excellent university, and an excellent hockey program here to offer them that really is a tremendous opportunity for them. We emphasis and build on that pride of being from Manitoba, and coming back to represent your province.”
The Boxscore News has a CIS Weekend Preview story. It covers all the conferences and has a complete early season CIS schedule.
The Evil Monkeys open against the Dinos this weekend and it is previewed at The Gateway and at The U of A team site. The Evil Monkeys' pre-season wrap-up is also at The Gateway. Also, The Edmonton Journal has a story on the anticipated parity in the CW this year. They quote Eric Thurston (head organ grinder for these Evil Monkeys):
Quote:
Thurston shrugged off the results of a pre-season Canada West coaches poll that had the Bears ranked first of seven teams.
"I think that's more on reputation than anything," he said. "You've got to take the pre-season with a grain of salt. I didn't put us (first), obviously.
"I think Manitoba and Saskatchewan are going to be strong again. I haven't seen a lot of the other teams like Lethbridge, but I know what Manitoba has, what Saskatchewan has. I think we're not quite there yet and we've got a ways to go."
Sask is also at Regina to open the season with a "Battle of Banjoland". The Sheaf has a Huskies Preview. South Campus Sports lso reports that Dasilva loses the 'C' in Toon Town.
The Tweety-Birds have shaken things up with two late recruits, Michae Liambis and Nolan Toigo. This has been reported at The Vancouver Sun, South Campus Sports, and Yahoo Sports. Liambis is the infamous goon, released by the Leafs, and Toigo was cut by the Edmontown Greasers.
St. Cloud State hosts the Bisons on Saturday night. Their Weekly Release (pdf) is available. They also have a preview story about being Ranked #6 in the NCAA by USA Today.
The Bisons will then stop at Grand Forks to play UND at the Ralph on Sunday night. UND Live Stats will be available. Also, UND tops the WCHA Coaches' Poll (with SCSU 2nd). The UND v Bisons Preview is also up. Check back there for a radio link at game time. This is likely the last time the Herd will face the Fighting Sioux. UND must change their moniker next year.

The parking lot was no doubt full of tractors and combines as the Banjo Boys battled it out for bragging rights in Regina's new rink. The Huskies' banjos were better-tuned than the Cougars'. Despite being severely outshot (34-25), the Mutts relied on goalie David Reekie to post a shut-out and steal two points.
The Battle of Alberta went to the Evil Monkeys in decisive fashion. Calgary had a disappointing pre-season and, as usual, this carried over to the start of the regular season. I thought Calgary was looking good last year but it seems things just aren't the same so far this year. It was only 2-1 after one. But in the second Alberta outshot Calgary 12-3 and outscored them 3-0.

The CIS site has introduced a Friday Recap for all games across the country. It has the score and a game story on each game with links to boxscores and recaps. Nice feature. BTW, there were two games in the OUA. Ryerson beat Nipissing 5-3 and Brock beat York 3-2. They also have an all-sports Broadcast Schedule. One link takes us to the U of A Broadcast of the Evil Monkeys v Dinos Rematch.
The UBC Thunderbirds have a Weekend Preview of their trip to the states, where two of their three opponents are named "Mavericks".

I was listening to the St. Cloud radio broadcast. It seemed to be a fast=paced game. It also seemed that the Bison goaltending was less than stellar. Starter Steve Christie had the night off so Jessie Deckert and Joe Caligiuri split the game. Deckert allowed 3 goals on 16 shots whilst Caligiuri allowed 4 goals on 11 shots. The Bisons outshot yet-another-team-named-Huskies by 34-27.
In another line-up note, the Bisons appear to have an injury bug. Defenceman Patrick Flynn had to play on the wing. Also scratched were forwards Kyle Howarth, Joey Moggach, and Wes Pawluk, defenceman Brandon Lockerby, and goaltender Steve Christie.
The Huskies built up a 3-0 lead and things looked grim. However, 2nd period goals by Blair Macaulay and Riley Dudar narrowed the gap to 3-2. It appeared that SCSU had disheartened the Bisons with a last-minute goal, but the Bisons responded with their own last minute goal, by Jared Walker, to make it a 4-3 deficit after two.
In the 3rd period, Ian Duval tied it up 5 minutes in. But that was as close as it got. SCSU scored 3 times on 7 shots in the period and claimed the win.
As of this post, none of the sites have a game story posted. Maybe check the U of R, U of S, and CIS sites on Sunday. The game was scoreless after 2 periods, despite Sask firing 29 shots on Adam Ward. But when a game stays close, all it takes is one period. By all accounts, the 3rd was tight and the Cats beat the Dogs this time, to give everybody in Banjoland 2 points to start the season.
The Evil Monkeys scored another decisive victory to sweep the Battle of Alberta. The Dinos have to be concerned about their lack of goal-scoring. They struggled in the pre-season as well. Still, lots of teams drop a pair of games in Edmontown.
UBC is also on a 3 games in 3 nights road-trip to the NCAA. It seems Liambis and Toigo did not suit up for UBC.

The Bisons again played with a somewhat out-of-sorts line-up. Their top player in the pre-season (Jered Walker) sat out but at least forward Kyle Howarth was able to go. However, neither Joey Moggach nor Wes Pawluk were able to play so once again Patrick Flynn was in as a forward. Brandon Lockerby was still not ready for action, and goaltender Joe Caligiuri was scratched in favour of Steve Christie.
It appeared to be a game low on action. The shots were 32-24 in favour of UND. Dane Crowley gave the Bisons a 1-0 lead and Mike Hellyer notched the 2nd goal. In between, UND was on the power play for about half the game. I hate it when games get that way. The Bison-Badger game I saw was like that.
IAE, the Bisons likely enjoyed their southern sojourn. They got to play in front of 10,000 fans at The Ralph, which would be kind of cool. If you want some video, check the links at the UND story.
This would rate as an upset for the H0rny Ones. The poll I saw had Denver #9 in the NCAA. Lethbridge is probably #4 or #5 in the CW according to most pundits. Former Bison Nick Hotson scored a hat-trick for Lethbridge.
UBC are CW underdogs this year so this should come as no surprise. In fact, I have yet to hear a pundit select them for anywhere but 7th. Still no sightings of Toigo or Liambis in the Tweety-Birds' cage.
OTHER NEWS:
The CIS Saturday Recap is up now. It was a blurb on each game, with video links as well (where available). They have highlights of Calgary @ Alberta. I hope they keep doing this all year. The CW series are summed up in stories at the CIS Blog and at South Campus Sports. Evan Daum is bullish on Regina. I'll have to see them score more. Of course, last year they, Lethbridge, and UBC all got off the horrid starts and had almost no chance to make a playoff run. We'll get a first-hand look at the Puddy-Tats when they visit the Herd on the weekend. The Regina site now has posted a Game Story for their Saturday win in the Battle of the Banjos. The Saskatoon Star-Phoenix has a pre-season story on every team in the CW.

This game appeared to follow the classic U of L pattern - be outshot and hang in as long as possible and squeeze out a point or two. Reese St. Goddard was in goal tonight. He stopped 16 of 17 shots in 3rd period alone. If this trip was for points, the H0rny Ones would have landed 3 points in 3 games in 3 nights. Not too shabby.
Like the Horned Team, the Tweety-Birds came up with a good performance in their 3rd game in 3 nights. They outshot MSU 40-32. Must have been some outstanding goaltending with only one goal from the 72 shots.

CanadaWest teams (Letbridge, UBC, Manitoba) go a combined 1 for 7 in exhibition games against Western NCAA competion. Horns with the only win and a very close loss.
AUS teams (Acadia,ST FX,STU,UNB) split with Hockey East and ECAC competition going 5W,5L,1T.
The Toronto Varsity Blues out of the OUA get blasted by football scores, by Boston University during there 2 game trip south of the border!
UNB has swept all 3 NCAA Div 1 exhibition games, outshooting the home team in all games and have won 8 straight pre-season games, including the Western trip to Alberta.
UNB will also play 2 more games at the Christmas break against Providence College Friars (Hockey East) on home ice.

i am alittle concerned about our Bisons. Seems we have beefed up our defence but our forwards are tiny.
and what do you make of some of the killers that have landed in CW.
easily the biggest bully in the league is the UBC dude and he added that scholar from the OHL. Guy has done nothing but take guys out when he plays ...fits right into that Milan's MO.
And holly crap you seen Ryan Lett play. Hardly!!! no minutes ever but straight kook from the "dub". Erb and the boys better get their tie downs reattached? What are they thinking??

UBC have always had a lot of big guys but it hasn't helped them. I remember Benias ramming their big D into the boards when they were here for the playoffs a couple of years ago. IMO, coaching is their weakness. They also had a lot of guys who took stupid penalties, like May.
Of course, we have to see what happens to Liambas. I would have to think that he'll either straighten out or be suspended awfully fast.
There are lots of former junior goons who have adapted their game to the CIS once they cannot fight. This goes all the way back to Stu Grimson with the Bisons.
The Bisons have a big D and maybe more big forwards would help. I would have liked another good recruit from the WHL up front, myself.
The full press release is at GoBisons.ca and a blurb is also at CJOB.com. While Mike Hellyer gets the "C", Nolan Waker, Riley Dudar, and Dane Crowley will each wear the "A". Also, Jim Bender at The Winnipeg Sun has a piece on both men's and women's teams. It mostly dwells on old news, like the Bison-Moose game and Hayley Wickenheiser joining the Dino ******.
There will be 2 CanadaWest teams in this years University Cup, as the rotating wild card berth has been changed from a third OUA team and given to the west for the second straight year. This from the CIS championship website.
Two teams from each conference, will be more appealing to the fans in Fredericton and they will get the chance to see another team other than Alberta. This should also make for a very competitive tournament with 2 teams also from the AUS.
So very important to get out of the gate fast, home ice advantage will be so crucial as the home team gets all the games in a best of 3 series in CanadaWest .
Dave Adolph got his home advantage last year and the favoured Saskatchewan Huskies blew it against the Bisons.
My prediction is that we will see Eric Thurston's Bears in Freddy, but who will be the second team from the Wild West?
Waaaaayyyyyyy to early to be thinking about nationals. I think it is safe to say that the two CW semi-finals will be hotly contested. Home ice is a big advantage. But there have been more upsets than usual in the last few years.
After a pummeling by UNB the Evil Monkeys appear to be back to normal. If they slip back to the pack a little we could have a serious race for first for a change.
I really like the 2-2-2 allocation of berths. IMO, the OUA should never have 3 berths at nationals in a 6-team format. It should be 2-2-2 every year.
Couldn't agree more with the 2-2-2 format on a yearly basis! The OUA hasn't had a championship winner since UQTR in 2003 and has had more representitives than the other 2 league's! It seems that UQTR has had it easy in the past coming out of the weak Far East division.
Does Lethbridge have a team to challenge Sask and Manitoba?
Lethbridge seems to be like they have been for several years now. They keep it close and hope to force OT and steal games. They are a tough opponent but it's hard to be successful enough using that formula to get 2nd place.
The Bisons started the season with a 3-2 loss to Regina on September 11th. The Herd came back to beat Sask, sweep a weekend series against Brock, and then lose to the Moose Prospects, St. Cloud State and UND, the latter two being top 6 NCAA teams.
The Cougars started the pre-season with 3 straight wins (they also beat Portage College and NAIT from the ACAC) and then lost 3 straight to Sask, Alberta, and Calgary. They opened their regular season with a 2-0 loss and then a 2-1 win against Sask in the Battle of Banjoland.
Former Bison Terrance Delaronde is now a Cougar. He had a load of goals in the pre-season and another against Sask. Goal-scoring is the key for Regina this year. They added several recruits with a goal-scoring pedigree, however they also lost several top scorers from a year ago. Gone are Jared Jagow (F), Carter Smith (F), Devon LeBlanc (F), Tanner Shultz (F), Blair Stengler (F), Caine Pearpoint (F), Brant Hilton (G). Newcomers are Cody Esposito (F), Cody Gross (F), Lucas Isley (F), Brett Lefler (F), Matt Strueby (F), Terrance Delaronde (F), Tyler Penny (F), Jordan Reeve (D), and A.J. Whiffen (G).
The Cougars are out to avoid the poor start of last season when they, Lethbridge, and UBC were all virtually out of top 4 contention by Christmas. I suspect they will be close to, but just out of, a playoff berth by year's end.
I was hoping to find some preview stories on the Bisons, but found none. Hopefully they will have a full compliment of forwards. Against the WCHA opponents last weekend they had only 11 forwards and 7 defencemen.
The rest of the CW teams have the weekend off, as do the whole AUS. The only other CIS games this weekend are 8 per night in the OUA.
This was a disappointing result but not necessarily a disheartening performance. In general the Bisons carried the play and generated the better scoring chances. The Puddy-Tats were, however, opportunistic. In the end, they cashed their chances and stole a couple of points. So even a loss tonight and they will have gained 4 points against two contenders before Lethbridge and UBC even get out of the gate.
The 1st period suffered from too many penalty calls, 4 to each side. The disruptions caused the game to lose its flow. An early golapost by the Bisons was countered by a Cougar PP goal, by Terrance Delaronde.
The 2nd period was much the same. The Cougars scored an even strength goal, which appeared to be kicked into a loose net, then tallied another on a PP and it was 3-0. Normally, a 3-0 lead would be insurmountable. But the way the game was going it seemed reasonable to root for a comeback. The 3-0 lead lasted only 24 seconds. The Bison big line made it 3-1 when Jered Walker scored (from Hellyer and Duval).
In the 3rd period the whistles got a rest and the Bisons took over. However, Adam Ward (my guess is he's a hybrid of Adam West and Burt Ward) stood tall in the Cougar goal. Pucks were bouncing off his banjo left and right. Tyler Dittmer notched a goal 8 minutes in and it was 3-2. As the Bisons pressed, the first penalty of the period was called 16 minutes in and more close calls followed. However, some sloppiness by the Bisons allowed Delaronde to score on a breakaway and it was 4-2. A late goal made it 5-2 and that was that.
The UBC Thunderbirds will wrap up the exhibition schedule this weekend with a double-header against the Victoria Salmon Kings. The Kings have former Moose Milan Gajic and former UNB Squirrel Rob Hennigar. They apparently have only 18 players in camp.

The poor little kittens were royally squashed tonight. Try to picture some cute little fluffy kittens scratching around in a litter box looking for a place to take a dump and then being trampled by a stampeding Herd of Bison. That's what this game looked like.
The 1st period was all-Bisons. The shots were 13-4 and the score was 2-0 with goals from Jeremy Schappert (on the PP with less than 2 minutes left) and Nolan Waker, with 3 seconds remaining. The Bisons were assessed 5 minor penalties whilst the Cougars were tagged with 3. About the only time the Cougars got out of their own end was on the power play.
The 2nd period was odd. The Bisons were penalized 4 times in about an 8 minute time frame. However, the Bisons scored twice in that period, Troy Crowley between penalties and Waker (with his second) shorthanded. Waker and Del Cowan, though killing a penalty, criss-crossed passes around Regina as they set up a beauty of a goal.
Then, with the Bisons up 4-0, Regina really came unglued. They took their first two penalties of the period almost back-to-back. Mike Hellyer then scored with the Bisons up 2 men. Regina goaltender Adam Ward then went nuts and pushed his net over when the refs were getting ready for the draw. He was given a gross misconduct.
It only took 22 seconds of the 3rd period for a melee to break out. Bison Jered Walker and Cougar Bender the Robot were pushing and shoving and they, and 3 players on each team, were then given 10 minute misconducts. So for half a period the penalty boxes were mighty crowded. The teams settled down and not much happened, but for Blair Macaulay scoring another 2 goals for Manitoba. I think the Bisons just wanted to put the Kittens out of their misery. And Regina knew that their escape from the Land of Hillbillies was about to end.
The team line-ups were exactly the same as for Friday night. However, Riley Dudar left the game in the 1st period with an injury and Chris Benias followed with a misconduct. After that happened. Troy Crowly played wing with Macaulay and Tyler Dittmer and Patrick Flynn saw spot duty both as a forward and d-man.
The Bisons now have a bye week followed by two away weekends, in Saskatchewan then Lethbridge. They are then at home once again against the Kittens on Nov 5 and 6.
Mike Liambis and Nolan Toigo made their debuts for the 'Birds in this one. Liambis has an assist an 2 PIMs. Victoria gradually pulled away as the game continued. It was 2-1 Victoria after one, with SOG 8 apiece. It was 5-3 after two, with SOG 18-9 in the period. The `Kings have tallied one more in the 3rd and the game is still in progress.
I am wondering why Victoria has not picked up more guys from the Moose camp. They need way more bodies to ice a team, let alone have tryouts. They must be expecting a handful of players yet from the Moose.
These two play again on Sunday in Victoria.

Ashley Prest has a Free Press Story on the Bison men's and women's hockey teams. Last night's game also has the Bison recap printed at CJOB.com. BTW, the Bison ****** split their weekend series with the Alberta Pandas. They won 2-0 on Friday and lost 2-0 on Saturday.
The game wound up being 8-6 for Victoria. The Salmon Kings and Thunderbirds have both posted game stories. Liambis was in the centre of a brouhaha of some sort in the third period which is not described in either story. UBC had a last minute power play and pulled their goalie. But Victoria scored into the empty net to salt away the win.
The Fish were all over the Thunderchickens in their Sunday re-match. The shots were 45-26 for Victoria, including 21-5 in the 3rd period. It was a 2-1 heading into the 3rd.

The first thing I noticed was that Adam Ward was not dressed for Regina, implying to me that he was out due to the gross misconduct against the Bisons last weekend.
The second thing I noticed is that the Kittens were badly outshot but still claimed victory. Their backup goaltender, A.J. Whiffen, stopped 33 of 34 Puppy shots. The Kittens were down 1-0 after 1 then scored 2 in the 2nd. The Puppies outshot them 12-2 in the 3rd, to no avail. The Puppies have scored 4 goals through 3 games thus far.
Sask cannot be happy with a 1-2 start against their provincial underlings. If they fall to 1-3, yikes! The Bisons travel to Saskatown next weekend.
CALGARY DINOS 5
LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 4
(in shoot-out)
After a shaky pre-season and a sweep in Alberta, this was a big win for the Dinos. Ironic that the H0rny Ones beat them twice in shoot-outs in pre-season. The bad news here (for the rest of the league) is that 3 points were awarded to the teams.
Calgary held leads of 3-0 and 4-1 in the game. It took a 3-goal Lethbridge uprising in the 3rd period to force the OT. Reid JHorgenson scored twice for Calgary. Former Bison Nick Hotson scored for Lethbrdige.
This game was the west coast shocker. The Evil Monkeys appeared to have rebounded from their pre-season pounding by UNB. But the Thunderchickens have had some decent games in pre-season and cannot be discounted. Especially on home ice. My suspicion is still that they shall finish last. But they will win their share of games. I do recall them sweeping the Evil Monkeys in an early season series a couple years back before both clubs returned to usual. What struck me as odd is the low shots totals (19-18 for Alberta). In fact, each team had only 5 shots in the 3rd.
South Campus Sports has a nice compilation of the numbers in Canada West. They have quantified each team by year of eligibility and home province. The Bisons have 23 of 25 players from Manitoba, the strongest home flavour in the league (and likely all of university hockey). The Bisons also have 5 players in their 5th year, which is unusual for them. Many players in the past have gotten their degree ASAP and then move on. I guess that many have stretched out a 5th year this time to go for nationals one more time.

UNB looked invincible in the pre-season. Then they return to the AUS and lose to UPEI, a team touted to be "on the bubble" when it comes to even making the playoffs. STU and Dalhousie must be shaking their heads over their margins of defeat. The CIS Blog has an AUS Preview and a Christmas Wishbook, which links to pre-season stories from the east coast.
The OUA may not be as shocking, but one does have to sit back and wonder if anybody will come forth as a national contender. McGill seem poised to do so after thumping UQTR. Laurier have done well after the pre-season, but had few pundits touting them. Lakehead and the Urban Cowboys seem luke-warm. And it's hard to know what to make of Waterloo and Guelph.
