Free Agent Frenzy Signing 7/1/2010

With Free Agency set to begin tomorrow, what do you expect Doug Wilson's FIRST action to include?

burying murray in worcester like we did mclaren and giving volchenkov the big bucks. and maybe picking up a free agent goalie since there's a ton of capable ones out there, but goalie won't matter much if we have huge holes in defense.

Doug will sleep late, roll out of bed around 11:30. Take a long brunch with Greg and head over to the coast to enjoy some beautiful sunshine. He'll have his phone along with him and will drop a couple calls to Turco and Setoguchi, offering them whatever the shells on the beach appear to him as as the waves bounce them around. Manny will try to get in touch to get things squared away, but Doug's cell (AT&T!) will drop the signal repeatedly (Cursed iPhone4 antennae!) .

And somewhere, for no reason that he can put a finger on, Evgeni Nabokov will smile a strange little smile, as the ink on his new contract with the Philadelphia Flyers or Tampa Bay Lightning dries.

That is an unintelligent idea in the worst of times and the feasibility of it is not factually based at all.

Bad Pole, should have been able to select multiple options.

He will sign a goalie, I have absolutely no doubt of that. I also think he will pickup a top4 defender, but I can't select both!

I'm hoping for an upgrade of the D and the re-signing of Manny.

Maybe a cheap goalie to duke it out in training camp with Greiss and Stalock.

That's what I hope for.

What will happen might be a different beast. We could see Jumbo get an extension. We could see DW sign another 7th defenseman for 3.5 mill. We'll see.

Yea, I realized this after the fact. Especially with my wording in the pole question, "action(s)." Sorry guys.

Chicago proved that you can get a cup without an elite goalie, so assuming DW is doing this, and this is why he let Nabby go, I fully expect him to somehow do something that would make our D the most feared in the NHL.

if he leaves the D and G as it is, I will officially want his job

what are you talking about? He signed Wallin to his largest contract ever. He made his move.

Well I would go this route too, but with Wilson showing interest in Turco, he's probably throwing 3 mill at him, rather than trying to upgrade the D as much as possible and signing a cheap vet goalie.

DW is not gonna bury an NHL Capable player like Murray in the AHL like that. He did it with K-mac due to his knees. Even when he eventually tried to trade him he could not pass the physical.

Turco.

He will then miss out on Hamhuis, Volchenkov or anyone else. Mid-July or August, he's gonna sign some irrelevant players to "improve" the roster.

none of

hammy, vol, kubina, martin or any other top 4 dman available on the market.

He will sign what he considers a #7 (Jay Leach?) for league minimum and someone stupid like Turco for 4 million. This will also be teh first time I actively boo someone on the Sharks.

Based on recent speculation, I'm starting to think maybe Turco. However, I think our first signing last year was Nichol around July 15th, so wouldn't be surprised if a few days go by before DW makes a move. Just hope by then it's not too late.

He'll throw 4-5m at turco and then tell us why turco is 10x better than nabby. He wont go after a defenseman because turco also plays defense and wallin is a top 4 dman, and demers is supposed to improve to be a top 4 as well.(and because we can't afford to "overpay" one after overpaying turco and wallin).

It is usually about 3 hours after the start before the first confirmations come in. IIRC, 9am pacific for the start.

With the Flyers re-signing Leighton I think its a pretty safe bet that Marty Turco will be in Teal this season. I'm hoping for $2 million but it will likely be $3 (not much more than that, please?).

From what I gather most people on this board are dead-set against Turco but I think he could be a pretty good pick up on a one or two year deal. He had a bad season with Dallas but not too long ago wasn't his name tossed around as one of the best goaltenders in the league? He certainly stonewalled the Sharks on numerous occasions. He plays the puck well and can help move the puck up the ice. At the very least, I think he will be as good as Nabokov but will come cheaper.

Count me as one of the few who hopes we sign Turco, so long as the contract isn't Wallin-terrible.

you mean in 02-03? i don't think he's gotten a single vezina vote - even for 3rd place - since then.

turco reportedly turned down "a little over 2m/yr" (3yrs, 6+m) already, so i'm not terribly optimistic about his deal not being wallinfuriating

San Jose is probably his first choice though. Doubt he is too concerned about money at this point in his career.

it's a possibility, but philly is a cup finalist with a stronger blueline. it would give him a better chance to win now.

if SJ is tops it's to stick it to dallas for kicking him out. it's not like SJ is very close to dallas (in fact it's farther away than philly)
