Personally, I'd like to see us make a move for Willie Mitchell, but I doubt DW does anything
Huskins is going to be a top 4 defenseman next season.

God help us all.

EDIT: What happens if Kovalchuk does go to LA? I'm scared guys

I'm honestly asking, why does everyone hate the idea of signing Turco to a 1.5-2.5m deal? He is by no means a bad goalie, and he is 1 year younger than nabby. He posted a .913 last year on a relatively weak Dallas team...

Why do we hate him? I mean, it's Turco, so we obviously hate him, but why?

Because he's Turco. He's the goalie with the pretty little pads who hates his net and gets harassed by Sharks fans.

I wouldn't be scared just yet, at least not until rosters become more defined.

His incessant desire to play the puck has come back to bite him in the ass in recent years.

and where did you hear 1.5M/yr was even a possibility? he's already turned down >2M/yr from a contender.

money got relatively tight with the wallin signing and if turco comes in at 2.5-3.5/yr it signs the pink slips for a roster player or two and preempts the possibility of a UFA pickup

Hopefully Turco signs with another team rather quickly tmr therefore removing himself from the list of possible goalies for the sharks.

What scares me though, is that rumour of someone seeing him in San Jose...

ahhhhhhhhhh

Turco at $2.5 per for 2 years is a good signing IMO as long as the approach is to keep him at 50 games. What I like about Turco and Greiss are their ability to start the offense. Nabby was HORRIBLE with the puck. But goalies that can retrieve the dump and start the offense force other teams to adapt on the entry and that strengthens the defense's hand - which is needed with our defense as presently structured. I can see those two feeding off each other. Marty isn't getting many options in the West and I think he would rather stay here so its possible he could sign on day one with us.

Others who could fall our way might be Ellis instead of Turco and on defense, maybe:
  • Tony Lindeman
  • Pavel Kubina
  • Willie Mitchell
  • Kurtis Foster
Possible if we don't get Manny, that we go after Eric Belanger or Brendan Morrison instead. But I am not holding my breath on signing any skater in day 1. I think DW has a price in mind for a defenseman and one of those 4 will need to fall into that range and that will probably happen after those with bigger pocketbooks sign the players they want first.

nabby horrible with the puck, really? He's obviously not as offensive minded as Turco when dealing with the puck, but he certainly had a very active stick. He was extremely good at decision making too, playing it to the correct defensemen and his communication with them was well above average, in my opinion.

Other goalies struggle so much with hesitation and panicking. Nabby was cool, calm, and collected 99 percent of the time.

Turco is simply risky. Sometimes it pays off and occasionally it leads to an odd man rush. just risk/reward.

Nabby was absolutely horrible out of the crease until last year when he was acceptable most of the time.

When you critique how a goalie plays the puck you need to investigate if issues are with the goalie or the system.

He couldn't make a decision half the ****ing time. Then by the time he did the opposing team was taking the puck from him or he was passing it to them.

Which is partially his fault and partially the system's. There were points in the season last year where I seriously wondered if the Sharks had a breakout.

But he didn't even do it that much and last year I wasn't as freaked out when he did. But that's what we need. It's like every other team had a goalie that would bang it right back out 3/4's of the time we dumped it in. Not so much the other way. Granted we tended to back in too much and let teams just bring it in while we dumped much more cause we seemed to have so much trouble carrying the puck into a zone.

I am really hoping whoever we get is a lot better at it than Nabby was. If it's Turco I'll love it as long as he has a bounce back year and it's at 3m or less.

Let's keep an eye on whoever it is and see if he is 99% strong side, like Nabby. If he is, that's system.

That should happen some afternoon in the off-season. Maybe we should get a NorthBay WineSharks Tasting road trip at Merryvale some Saturday in September? I can handle logistics over here.
