October 1st, 2011

Steven Dabney - Dabney centered the 4th line for the Coyotes once again in the preseason, and the offensively-gifted 25 year old was scoreless in 3 games, finishing at a -1. He is third on the center depth chart behind Lecavalier and Mark Bell, and is ahead of Curtis Brown, but it remains to be seen where he plays once the regular season starts.
ALTERNATE REALITY: Dabney posted 70 points in 74 games as a rookie for Manchester in the AHL after being drafted in the 3rd round by the Kings. He is on the cusp of becoming an NHL regular but GMBGM is waiting for Datsyuk's and Forsberg's contracts to get closer to expiration before dealing them.

Thomas Duddy - Duddy is 3rd on the Blues center depth chart behind Angelo Esposito and Jimmy Gosselin, who was just drafted 1st overall. Duddy played in 3 preseason games and was scoreless with a single shot on goal.
ALTERNATE REALITY: Duddy just signed an ELC with the Kings but might not make the team out of camp and is only 18 so cannot play in the AHL. GMBGM made a mistake and thought he was 19 approaching 20. Oh well.

Christoph Gaspar - Gaspar played on the second line in the preseason, along with Arnason and Nate Horton, posting 4 assists in 2 games. Could this be the year that the talented German finally breaks out?
ALTERNATE REALITY: Gaspar has bounced around from team to team but finally starting making some noise with Manchester of the AHL. He's not nearly as good as in our main game, but has time to improve as he's only 18.

Nick Grunville - The 23 year old is ready to go and is hoping to hit the 60 point mark after posting 53 and 54 points the past two years in the Ger-2 league.
ALTERNATE REALITY: After being drafted 20th overall by the Wings, Grunville has remained stagnant in the NCAA ranks, though his shooting is a bit better.

Nicholas Guy - Dynamo Moscow played 3 exhibition games this past September, one against New Jersey, one against the Flyers, and one against the Islanders, losing all three games by a combined score of 22-2. Still, Guy performed pretty well, ending up at only a -5 with 3 blocked shots.
ALTERNATE REALITY: Guy immediately signed on with the Flyers and has played 3 seasons with their AHL affiliate. Pretty comparable reality, actually.

Darcy Regier, Jr. - Since I just posted about him, I'll just mention his preseason stats:
5 GP, 1-4 record, 4.85 GAA, .844 save percentage.
ALTERNATE REALITY: Regier went 3rd overall to Columbus after being ranked 1-2-1 over the course of the season. He was excellent in the WHL.

Dave Trippler - Just wrote about him, but he will be playing in the DEL for a team with a polar bear as it's logo, so even if he never sees NHL ice, it's still pretty awesome. He likely will be playing RW on the top line with Ales Kotalik and Marcel Goc.
ALTERNATE REALITY: I haven't a clue.

Andrew Turnwall - Turnwall is a virtual lock for top line minutes with Robyn Regher once again, and his excellent preseason performance only solidifies that further. In 6 games with the Lightning, he had a goal and 3 assists, a +1, and 6 minutes in the box to go along with 14 hits. On top of that, he is rumored to be a pretty decent goaltender coach, especially for a 22 year old defenseman.
ALTERNATE REALITY: Was drafted at the top spot and signed an ELC with the Kings. He and 2nd overall pick Tyler Myers are expected to become cornerstones of an impressive young defensive corps that includes Shea Weber, Mike Green, and Marc Staal.

You were drafted in the 1st by the Isles and, despite putting up better numbers at Hahvahd, your attributes are worse.

Darcy has been placed on Waivers. He has played only 2 games for the Wild and while he has a 2-0 record, he also has a 3.00 GAA and an .887 save percentage. Both are big steps up from his Red Wings days, but still not very good.

A prelude to him going to the AHL? He could use the time in the minors.

Indeed he could....

November 23rd, 2011

The Colorado Avalanche have claimed Darcy and assigned him to Lowell in the AHL. He played 1 AHL game with the Houston Aeros, notching a victory after letting in 2 goals on 29 shots. Darcy is now third on the Avalanche depth chart, behind Jose Theodore and Brian Eklund.

Is it all right with everyone if I skip the customary midseason report in an effort to move this along a bit quicker? The October, January, and June reports always take some time, so if I could cut one out, it will move us along faster.

Next update, barring any trades or signings, will be the post Cup update, so it will be pretty big.

No alternate realities, though.

Eklund of hockeybuzz fame? I mean, Eklund + Darcy = a whole lot of BS behind Theodore.

I'm not planning on starting a new one any time soon, maybe ever. When I finally fizzle out on this one, perhaps somebody picks up the slack and starts a new one, but you never know.

Contract having expired, Nick Grunville has left EC Bad Tolz and signed with Wolfe Freiburg of the tier 2 German league. He is set to make $26k on his one year deal and has $2,600 bonuses at 25 goals, 35 assists, and 60 points. The deal also includes a player option year.

Steven Dabney - Dabney had an excellent opportunity to break out this season as he split time centering the Coyotes 2nd and 3rd lines, but his production wasn't quite up to snuff. Tallying 21 points, in the form of 10 goals and 11 assists, Dabney finished a +2. His contract is set to expire at the end of this month. As a point of interest, Dabney's linemate Alex Vasyunov was suspended 26 games at the end of the season for pushing a referee.
Career highs: Shots [94], hits [11], takeaways [15], faceoff percentage [51], ATOI [10:40].

Thomas Duddy - Duddy was once again buried on the 4th line of the Blues and the talented youngster continues to critically underachieve. Despite his vast potential, it is starting to look like a distinct possibility that constant mismanagement could undercut a promising career. Playing 73 games this season, he finished with 3 goals and 5 assists, with a career low -25. His contract is set to expire at the end of this month, though he does hold a player option year.
Career highs: PiMs [44], shots [59], takeaways [8], blocked shots [24], faceoff percentage [62], misconducts [2], ATOI [9:27].

Christoph Gaspar - Another player buried on the 4th line, Gaspar needs to leave Montreal soon if he wants to make anything of his career. Playing in 79 games, the slick swingman scored a career high 11 goals and added 18 assists. The 22-year-old German has two more years on his contract and will make $1.2M a season. He also has a player option year.
Career highs: Goals, points [29], shots [123], powerplay goals [2], powerplay assists [2], powerplay points [4], giveaways [23], takeaways [13], ATOI [12:04].

Nick Grunville - Grunville had an excellent offensive season with Bad Tolz, notching 60 points in 49 games, on the strength of a career high 42 assists. It is interesting to note that he played 30 seconds fewer per game this season, not to mention one fewer game, but still increased his point total.
Career highs: Assists, points, first star [3], powerplay assists [13], powerplay points [18], hits [2]

Nicholas Guy - As Guy's contract expires with Dynamo Moscow, there is reportedly some interest from a few AHL teams, and deservedly so. In 47 Super League games, he had 5 goals and 24 assists, plus a very solid +16. It is worth drawing attention to the fact that despite a year and a half in Mother Russia, Guy did not even gain a basic usage of the Russian language.
Career highs: Games played, goals, assists, points, +/-, shooting percentage [14.7], first star [2], powerplay goals [3], powerplay assists [7], powerplay points [10], shorthanded assists [1], shorthanded points [1], GWG [1], hits [59], blocked shots [25].

Darcy Regier, Jr. - Darcy played much of the season in the AHL, where he performed quite well, finishing with a 32-12-5 record with all but one game coming for the Lowell Loch Monsters. He posted an excellent 2.14 GAA and a .923 save percentage, being named the first star 8 times. He recorded 4 cleansheets. He has another year on his contract, plus a player option year.

Dave Trippler - Trippler's first season in the DEL was a success as he put up 25 goals and 28 assists in 44 games for EHC Eisbaren Berlin of the DEL, finishing at a superb +35. He fired the biscuit 195 times and ended with a shooting percentage of 12.8. Other highlights: 4 first stars, 2 powerplay goals, 5 powerplay points, 3 game winners, 3 hits, and a 25:37 ATOI. He has another year on his contract and will make $300k. Linemate Ales Kotalik registered 66 points, while centerman Marcel Goc topped the 70 points plateau.

Andrew Turnwall - Perhaps the most surprising performance on our list came from Turnwall, who had a massive offensive breakout. The young defender, known for his tenacity in his own end, finished with 12 goals and 44 assists for 56 points. He ended the season a +41, had 119 shots on goal with a 10.1 percent shooting accuracy and sat in the box for 139 minutes. He played a complete, 2-way season, notching 19 of his points with the man advantage. Three of his 12 goals were game winners. Oh, and he threw down 111 hits and added 47 blocked shots while playing a career high 24:39 a game. His only negative statistic was his career high 190 giveaways, leaving his career total at 569 in 4 professional seasons, with only 70 takeaways. He signed a 2 year contract extension with the Bolts at $1.6M per season. It includes a player option year.

Around the NHL:

The Panthers won the Cup in 6 games over Phoenix. It is rumored that all 8 Coyotes fans watched at least part of each of the games when they remembered it was on TV.

Malkin led the league with 143 points. Iginla led with 80 goals. Kovalchuk had 76. Third place was Kane with 68.

Calder - Frank Harding [Gogulla was 2nd while Luc Bourdon [RIP] finished 3rd]
Art Ross, Hart - Malkin
Richard - St. Louis
Masterton - D. Sedin
Rocket Richard, Pearson - Iginla
Conn Smythe - Gagne
Selke - John Madden
Jack Adams - Jacques Martin
Norris - Mara
King Clancy - Halpern
Lady Byng - Samsonov
Vezina - MAF
Jennings - MAF
+/- Award - Kovalchuk
Roger Crozier Saving Grace - MAF

No kidding. Especially since his previous career high was 24, IIRC. He's like a Chris Phillips/Jay McKee type.

I suck. 10 goals splitting between the 2nd and 3rd line center? I'm Jiri Novotny 2.0

Finally Regier gets his game back on track. Now he's going to have to make the step back to the NHL.
