GM Wilson, who destroyed the hopes and dreams of every sharks fan last week with the ridiculous wallin signing that makes me wish we just traded for redden or finger instead, said this about your ex crap dman:
“He’s in a stopper role,” Wilson said. “He’s a big body against the other team’s best players.”
The role, he added, is what Wallin, 35, did for many years in Carolina and “with his injury we missed the opportunity to see him do what he did in Carolina during the playoffs. Often players in that role aren’t really appreciated until the games matter the most.”
So uh since I never saw him play (because he was your #7 or something, seems like everyone else had way more minutes over the years like Pit, Corvo, Hedican, etc), what is DW smoking here? Is he really really ********, or is he just slightly stupid and there's some truth to what he said there?
You are correct. He was always on the third pair in the playoffs (and usually in the regular season except when the team sucked--not a coincidence). He wasn't matched against top players. I wasn't paying close attention to match-ups in '02, but Hedican-Commodore had the shutdown duties in '06 and Gleason-Corvo in '09.
He didn't play a shutdown role here. He played a third-pairing role with PK time. There's a huge difference, but unfortunately idiotic fans that think that playing solidly in a third-pairing role makes you a top 4 defensemen (like Andrew Alberts, ) and some GMs can't figure out the difference.
The "he steps his game up for the playoffs" that gets thrown around in regards to Wallin is true, but it's kind of hard not to when you are as bad as he has often has been in the regular season.
