Can the rangers do anything significant already? y'know before every single FA is gone?
Don't get me wrong, I like the backup/EC signs but we need SIGNIFICANT help not secondary signings.
Depends what your definition of significant is. Regardless other than re-signing Staal and Girardi I can't imagine what significant move they should make this entire off season let alone the first day of FA.
Also we would need significant help only if we want to have a much better chance of winning the division THIS year. We don't have the resources and cap space available to get that help and no one is available to provide it anyway. I don't think the Rangers can even be capable of addressing the secondary scoring issue or even complimentary primary scoring for at least another year maybe two. So roughly the same team from the last year or three will be out there this year and likely next. Although this time next year a lot of significant things happen.
1) About 10 mil in cap space freed. Cally, Dubs, Artie, Boyle, Gilroy, Brashear, Voros all off the books. Likely Dubs and Cally re-signed to 3-4 mil per. neither has really earned more. Artie depends on this year but he's a RFA so he';ll be cheap. The NEXT year Drury, Avery, Roszi all come off. About 16 mil in space from those three alone.
2) Based on who comes off not only next year but the NEXT year after that there is room to sign a fairly expensive FA like Richards or Thor (using them as examples since a huge need is top line center) MDZ would also be a RFA so he'd be re-signed fairly cheap based on how Sather handles his RFA's.
A year from now there are a lot more interesting options. (Mikko koivu will be re-signed in Minn. He's their captain or basically is and their top player almost already.)
