LeBrun: Kings tried to acquire Kovalchuk's rights.

http://espn.go.com/nhl/blog/_/name/l...-draft-weekend

Quote:
LOS ANGELES -- The focus of the hockey world was in Los Angeles this weekend, and it may be yet again come Thursday when the NHL's free-agent market opens.

Sources confirmed to ESPN.com yet again Saturday that the Kings will make an offer to the prized jewel of a thin market, star winger Ilya Kovalchuk. They tried to acquire his rights this weekend from New Jersey, but were denied since the Devils remain interested in trying to re-sign the Russian star.

On the back end, Los Angeles also has eyes on a top-four defenseman, and if Dan Hamhuis doesn't sign with Pittsburgh, the Kings will take a look at him. The Kings also like Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle, but don't have a fit with Toronto because the Leafs want a top-six forward in return. That doesn't make sense for a Kings team looking to add a top-six forward, not get rid of one.

Either way, expect the Kings to be in the thick of things come Thursday as the team attempts to add the final pieces to an rising Western Conference powerhouse.
I hope we stay away from Kaberle

I am very surprised that they're even thinking about Hamhuis.

I'm happy if we can land him but that's an awful lot of money for our defense.

Hamhuis obviously wasn't getting the kind of numbers from the flyers but I would imagine that pens will pay something close to $5M to sign him. Which means, Eaton will hit the FA market.

well look, at the end of the day, Kovalchuk will decide...so it is useless to give away a cond. pick. If he wants to come, he'll come. And frankly, if he doesnt want to come, i'd rather NOT have him...nothing is worse than to have a player in the locker room who doesnt want to be apart of the team.

so let July 1st come I say...

If the Pens don't sing him, I definitely want us to look at him.. Unfortunately, signing Hamhuis would definitely make it much harder to sign Kovalchuk

I imagine the Kings can afford a top 4 defenseman at $3M to $4.5M, which is what I'd estimate Hamhuis or Volchenkov to get. But with free agency, you never know how desperate a team may get (see Rangers with Wade Redden).

How? He's a defensive defenseman who blocks shots and gets in lanes. Isn't that more of what the Kings needed from O'Donnell last season?

It all boils down to where he wants to play. Obviously money isn't the main motivator... We'll find out come July 1st who he wants to play for most. It's not Atlanta...not (yet) Jersey.. not the money..

It's nice the Kings are actually a destination Kovalchuk can think about without laughing for a change.

Yes, but July 1st isn't cooperating as it's still MONTHS away. So, as boring and redundant as it's been for the past month, please tolerate more of the same.

We're just going around in circles talking about the same **** over and over again.

July 1st is in less than a week RH hahahaha

all this wait will be worthwhile if DL signs him.. We all know Deano's sort-of got a problem with signing big name UFAs, let's see if he comes through for us this time around.

Kaberle's a great fit for us, just not worth trading pieces of the team for.

Ok, I got a question for you guys: Now, most of you seem to have a cap limit set for Kovy at around 8M. My question is if the dux offer Kovy the max 9.5M, would you rather that Kovy sign with the dux or that we match the offer so he can sign with us?

I've already gone on record saying that we pay Kovy whatever we need to. Yeah, it'd be great if it were a friendly cap but if it's 9.5M, I say pay him. And believe me, that extra 1.5M isn't going to kill us. If anything, we'll probably compensate for the additional 1.5M by signing other FAs for less.

Well, let's hear it.

On the off-chance that the Ducks are seriously interested, DL would almost have to match.

The Ducks have bigger fish to fry. They need defense badly so I expect them to go out and spend it there. But really the number one priority is getting Bobby Ryan signed.

DL can always sign him similar to a Hossa-like deal except maybe a million or so more.

It's a hypothetical question. Besides, if the dux really want a big name like Kovy to bring back the fans, they'll make sure they have the money. So, don't go pigeon holing yourself by saying their priority is defense and Bobby Ryan, because you really don't know.

I can definitely see the dux trying to keep Kovy away from us as much as they can.

Well yea, we don't know that. But come on, we all saw their D, it's pathetic. Here's a guess on how a portion of their cap space will likely be spent.

Ryan: $4M-$5M
Wisnewski: $3M
Big name FA D-Man: $5M

and they will probably bring back Selanne and/or Koivu.

Trade both Lupul and Blake and their 4M salary which will create an additional 8M. Then sign Ryan to 4M; Wis @ 3M; Hamhuis @ 4.5M; Kovy @ 9.5M; Selanne @ 2.5M; Koivu @ 2.5M; AV @ 4.5M.

Core Offense:

Koivu-Selanne-Kovy
Getzlaff-Ryan-Perry

Core Defense:

Lubo-AV
Hamhuis-Wis

Well, at least he'd still be in the east. That's the best we can hope for if he doesn't sign here.

He blocks as much shots as any of our current dmen and is more positionaly sound than all but Scuderi.
