A simple change of 1 letter and you end up with that. Well done!

All I can say is I hope 3rd times a charm. Thank Gawd its only for a year. I wouldn't have been surprised to see JR do something like 4 years with a NTC

I would rather have someone else personally. With so many defensemen still out their I think this is a bad signing by JR.

i wonder if this is the dman he was referring to about going out and getting after the carson thing. like he did last time with babs. we're bringing three new d, and the third one is this guy babchuk. you meant you were going for another, right jr?

He says he's still looking for another guy, and apparently he has them penciled into the Top 4 as he says McBain would drop down to the third pairing if they are signed.

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/canes/...canes#comments

Quote:
"We probably wouldn't be able to pay him this year," said Rutherford, who is still looking for a sixth defenseman.

He mentioned getting a call from the agent of Joe Corvo, who was sent to Washington before the trade deadline last season.

The way Rutherford sees it, as things currently stand, he'd have Tim Gleason and Jamie McBain paired, Joni Pitkanen and Babchuk paired and Jay Harrison with the final defenseman to be determined.

If Rutherford is able to get a higher end defensemen, which could come between today and a month from now, he said, he could pair him with Gleason and drop McBain down with Harrison.

McBain played better with Joni than anyone did and he wants to split them?

mcbain assumed to be top 4, mistake.

babs a top 4, mistake.

babs and pitts, the slowest footed defenseman in terms of their own zone, and both are weak and slow to react in front of the net? this either works really well or these two are putting up brindy minus numbers next season.

i dont mind the salary and term if babs is a third pairing guy with pp time on the second unit. on the first unit he better have become quicker or we're screwed. counting on him as a top 4, we arent legit on the back end.

.
Agreed. those 2 are terrible laterally.

hopefully the guy signed will be a 4/5 tweener so at least Mo has options if Babs cant play 19 minutes a game effectively(or McBain for that matter)

I'm tired of JR setting his defense pairings in July. Maybe we could ... I dunno ... see how these guys actually play together in training camp??

I know, crazy talk.

FWIW, I like two puck-movers together. I know it's standard to want to put an offensive type with a stay-at-home type, but that doesn't seem to work. Two puck movers keep the puck out of their own zone. They aren't as effective in the corners, but if they can transition quickly enough, they don't have to be. I'd almost rather play Pitkanen/McBain and Gleason/Carson (or another similar solid-but-unspectacular guy, like Pothier) and throw two completely different looks at opponents.

But again, I'd decide that IN FREAKIN' TRAINING CAMP!!

One of McBain or Babchuk should be one the 3rd pairing, not both of them. We were never going to bring in two top 4 d-men like playing Babs and McBain on the 3rd pairing would require... at least not two legit top 4 d-men. It's time for McBain to show whether he can handle it anyway.

I hope you guys realize it's not JR who is going to be setting the d-pairings anyway... that's Maurice's job. Sure, JR might have some say but ultimately it's up to Maurice.

Well if JR actually is still going after a d-man who will be top 4, it better by Lydman, cause I don't believe anyone else out there that we could afford would be truly top 4 material

EDIT: Unless we bring back Pothier, which I would definitely be fine with.

Pitkanen
Gleason
McBain
Babchuk
Sanguinetti
Harrison

I'd like to see us sign a left handed guy to bump Harrison to #7. Too many RH shots.

Last edited by vwg*: 07-01-2010 at 01:21 PM. Reason: nevermind, Harrison shoots left.. but let's pretend he's a righty and go out and sign a competent LH defender...

Im still on the Morrisonn and Lundin bandwagon. Lydman and Tallinder are way too expensive for JR.

I was commenting on the story on CH.com in which Rutherford states exactly how he's pairing up the current d-men while planning his next move. I'm not making this stuff up. I'm reading actual stories written by actual Hurricanes employees.

And I am pretty sure you don't know a damn thing about the dynamic of the professional relationship between JR and Mo. Until you do, how 'bout not making sweeping generalizations about things you know nothing about.

LOL. I'm just telling you hockey teams aren't run like the Dallas Cowboys or Washington Redskins. Ultimately, the coach gets to decide line ups and such. The GM just gives him the players to work with. JR does NOT decide line combos or d pairings, that's the whole reason they, you know.. hire coaches.

But keep getting your panties in a bunch over nothing. Whatever makes you feel better.

I would rather have Morris then Babchuk for just a little more than one million more to have a far better defender. Just don't understand it.

They've already played together. About 40 games in fact. Worked out pretty well.
