So far so good, but we have 3 years to go still so let's not get ahead of ourselves.
He's 30, how much could he possibly regress over the duration of the contract? With his commitment to fitness, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets better rather than worse.
Speaking of the impact on the seasons that samuelsson and erhoff signed, compared to manny/torres ballard/hamhuis right now, it seems like the new guys always wow us (at least in the year we sign em on)
It's interesting how our pro scouting has gotten better ever since Gillis was hired. His acquisitions have gotten better with the likes of Samuelsson, Ehrhoff, and now Hamhuis, Torres and Malhotra. It still remains to be seen with Ballard but he's only going to get better with time after that time off due to injury. Did we change our pro scouting personnel? Or did Gillis just implement a different approach to evaluating players?
This is why I was so vocal about Gillis overlooking Malhotra last offseason. I still can't get over the fact we passed on him at 700K a year in August with Wellwood and Johnson slated to centre the 3rd and 4th lines.
At least Gillis didn't compound the problem by looking past him again. Manny is the perfect player to build the bottom 6 around.
Always nice to be proven wrong when you're unhappy with an organizational decision. Was unhappy with the amount but not the acquisition, but now that we're a few games in it's clear that it's a good contract.
Not saying he will keep up this scoring pace at all, but all of the posters who were complaining about Manny not having any offensive tools are kicking themselves now
Where did this player come from? Expected faceoff prowess, defensive awareness, etc. But this guy has legit offensive presence as well; very power forward like with how he drives the net.

Speaking of fitness. Did anyone watch after hours last night when they had Modano On. He was talking about the fitness level the Wings players have and how the players buy into being the best shape they can be and it took him over a month to catch up after being with Stars

It is known around the Detroit Red Wings team as "The Chris Chelios Effect".
Here was Chelios' workout developed under the supervision of hockey fitness guru - TR Goodman and many players emulated Chelios in Detroit. Hey if a 47 year old can do it what excuse does a young 'un have? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...s.workout0917/
And then there are these little off-season and in-season additions:
Former Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman, who retired two years ago, said that after most hockey players have put away the weights for the day during the summer break and turned to their golf games, Chelios still has miles to go before he’ll rest. Chelios reaches for his mountain bike for 60-kilometre rides with friends through treacherous terrain near his summer home in Malibu, Calif., and then follows that up with paddle surfing in the Pacific Ocean.
And that’s after he’s gone through Goodman’s 60-minute workout that doesn’t allow any rest between different sets of exercises, primarily involving weights. The exercises, in which Goodman stresses form, are repeated in sequence until the hour is up.
During the season, one of Chelios’s rituals is riding a stationary bike in the sauna for 45 minutes or so, and slugging back two jugs of water as he pedals. He calls the exercise an “aerobic wash.”
Now he has retired he has joined the Red Wings front office and will be working with Wings prospects - some of them will never know what hit them. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=536651

Just so people know and in case they are thinking of trying it out: this last item can be very dangerous. This is how marathoners die of overhydration (and there is basically no scientific reason to do it in the first place - the net effect will be considerable electrolyte loss).
Speaking of training, I wish we hired Gary Roberts. He seems to be doing great things with young players in getting them in top shape. Sucks the Stars nabbed him.
I wanted 3 guys in the offseason.. I wanted Malhotra, Hamhuis, and Modin if we could get him as cheap depth. But, I was a BIT worried about the amount we gave Malhotra; I had him penciled in at 1.75mil. But, when I saw it, I was still behind it because that's obviously what it took to get the guy and we really needed him. Now, it's payed off and then some. Malhotra is still only 30, so, I don't see him regressing much by 33..
Anyone else notice how every single time Doug MacLean is on the Team 1040, he brings up how Manny is overpaid.
EVERY TIME!
It's not nearly as bad as the canned response about needing a puck moving defenseman every time he hears someone say Vancouver...
To his credit he usually follows the Malhotra comment by saying how underpaid Torres is so in a way it sort of balances out...
I don't mind listening to him since he doesn't care how unpopular his opinions may seem and he call it the way he sees it but at the same time I don't think he watches many games from our timezone closely so at time he seems really out of touch to how the team is playing.

It's really no surprise why he's been such a crap GM. The guy had one fluke run in 1996 and basically gauranteed himself a job for a decade.
The Jackets are still trying to recover from the crap that he left them in and just all around the guy has very basic knowledge of the game. I swear there are people on here that could do a better job of managing a team them he can.

Actually, that is what I enjoy most about him, but for a slightly different reason. He really is calling it the way he sees it, and it's hilarious to see someone with such an apparent lack of well rounded hockey knowledge and realize they ran an NHL club. In theory, anyway. Almost an NHL club? It's when you see these guys that you realize how far behind some of the old guard is.
This is the same reason it's funny to hear Mike Millbury on CBC defending his time as Worst GM Ever™. Although in Millbury's case I think he's actually become a very entertaining, engaging on-air personality who makes some interesting points about the game. His comments about players often leave me scratching my head (who he likes/dislikes/etc), but what would you expect from Mike #*&#ing Millbury?

Probably because Milbury had a fairly respectable NHL career - as a player - so he has some good insight into the game.
Is an example though that players don't necessarily make good managers.
It's like the guy somehow caught the Vancouver drafting curse. All those high picks and only Nash to show for it. Granted Nash is freaking awesome, but still...at least one other player from all those drafts? Their draft history is pretty ugly.
As for Malhotra being overpaid, there was a lot of similar comments made last summer/early last year to the contract we gave Samuelsson, about him being overpaid. He responded by having a career 30-goal season.
I don't see Malhotra keeping up this torrid offensive pace, but I do think he will have a career season in Vancouver. The opened up offensive style that they play will be conducive to that.
