What about all the left-handed shots on D? Hamhuis, Ballard, Edler, Ehrhoff, SOB, Alberts, Rome are all shoot left. If Bieksa gets moved out as people seem to suspect, that leaves Salo the only right-hand shot on D.

Accoriding to Pierre LeBrun - still not a done deal:

Hamhuis deal still not signed so other teams still calling agent trying to get back in but I think it'll still be Van for $27 M/6 yrs
What is this with Gillis deals? First the ballard trade was a moving target, now this...

as of right now, this is the defense:

Hamhuis-Ehrhoff
Ballard-Salo
Edler-Bieksa
O'Brien-Rome
Alberts

if Bieksa is moved (likely) and O'Brien is retained, one of the natural left side guys will be forced to move to the right. Not sure how Ballard has looked on the right before, but Edler is definitely better on the left side... and O'Brien hasn't looked there before either, which could push Rome up the depth chart to replace Bieksa as he's likely the best remaining option for the right side having looked comfortable there last year.

I think that Hamhuis however is the ideal fit next to Ehrhoff and will best compliment his game. I could see Ballard next to Salo, having played tough minutes in the past, while providing a good balance for Salo's lack of physical presence... would be comfortable with them as our top shutdown duo, and Hamhuis-Ehrhoff the top 2-way duo... and then let Edler carry the bottom pairing.

Edler-Bieksa is still a better pairing than having O'Brien, Rome or Alberts next to Edler... but $$ may no longer add up... if Bieksa is moved, I'd still like to see a good defensive right side guy brought in, though options likely aren't there... out of the choices we have after Bieksa, Rome is probably the best option next to him on the right side.

I love the fact we have Ehrhoff, Ballard, and Hamhuis all born in 82 and hopefully entering their prime, and with Edler a few years younger our D is looking very promising for the long term future. Fantastic work by Gillis really since he brought 3 of those guys in, all of whom have good speed, something which we were lacking before.

I hope this isn't like the Alberts deal when it was first reported as a 7th round pick and everyone has high fiving over it only to find out a few minutes later that it was actually a 3rd.

Hamhuis has made his decision to go to Van. But papers have not been filed, as other teams are making a hard late push to change his mind.

all is well

Hey, Oilers/Preds fan here. Congrats on picking up Hamhuis, you guys wil be frightening next year.
The only thing is... why so happy about the term? Some on the Preds board have called this signing "Wade Redden bad" and I am sorry to burst your bubble but it's quite true. Dan Hamhuis is not a 4.5M defenseman, you'll realize that soon enough. It's a hell of an overpayment.
That said, I want to stress that Hammer is a pretty good defender. Just, IMO, not a 4.5M defender.

Well Hamhuis wasn't any where near the top of my list, but adding him and Ballard sure remade our top 4. We now have 5 top 3(ish) dmen which is pretty skookum.

And then again when nobody knew Grabner was in the Ballard deal.

I really like that none of our D are too specialized. Willie was great but couldn't move a puck all that well. or shoot really either. If Bieksa goes then all of our D can move and defend.

What would you offer him? I would have been fine with 4 million. However lets face it, all dmen have been overpayed today.

He is a top 4 defeseman, and like it or not, the market for top 4 defensemen is now in the 4m-5m range. I would have preferred Martin at his price but 4.5m for a player like Hamhuis is clearly market value right now.

Pardon? Mitchell makes good first passes out of his own zone.
