Avs Sticking with "The Plan"

Quote:
Instead of trying to add a high-priced free agent or two this offseason – and possibly hampering the organization’s ability to re-sign its own players down the road – Sherman has stuck to his guns and shown faith in the young Avalanche squad. And why not? A quick examination of Colorado’s returning players shows a solid core in place that will certainly continue to grow and improve.

Wouldn't have minded having Michalek or Martin but nothing to complain about and next year is still as exciting as ever!

No doubt about it, we should enjoy the ride that is this growing team.

“I feel very comfortable about our ‘D’ core,” said Sherman. “We certainly believe our depth on the blue line is very strong and we look to have a competitive camp in September on the back end with a couple of spots that could be competed for.”

Who's ready for another year of crappy D?????

I'm highly disappointed in what happened today....Were still stuck with our best D-man being a #2 or 3, and about 5-6 other parts that may or may not show up on any given night...

I'm not asking for a spending spree, just something..

There hasn't really been any signing today where I turned green from envy. There were a few I wouldn't have hated but thats it.

I suspect that in a few days some of the UFAs will start to worry and then you can get them on a short and cheap contract. And if no deal is to be made I guess we just have to hope our prospects are ready.

I do think that if we don't improve the team, we might struggle to make the playoffs this year. I'm not sure we can count on the same level of heroics from Andy again.

So, Anderson has to save our ass for 70 games again next season?

I agree with Sherman on the forwards, but not doing anything about d-core is absolutely wrong.

One wouldn't expect to Sherman to come out and say "our defense sucks", and based on some of the laughable contracts given out today, I'm glad the Avalanche stayed away from players such as Hamhuis and Volchenkov.

But you would hope that he would acknowledge the fact that he would like to improve or tweek it, not necessarily say it sucks.

Either Sherman cant spend much more then the cap floor and is using the build from within as an excuse. Or hes gone mad.

I still want to see a 2nd/3rd pairing defensive guy and a 2nd/3rd line winger. Guys we could get for $2M....and yeah they might be crappy, but I don't think we're going to be able to count on the AHL guys as much as we did last year. But common sense says you get the bargain basement guys in August and not July 1st. Let's just hope those guys hanging around in August aren't named Darcy Tucker or Brett Clark. I might be ok with Clark for like $1M.

Who knows tho - we always dip into the AHL and find somebody.

I think the Sherminator's got a little bit of cold feet for FA after Giguere.

Risky business.

BUT... if we're going to rebuild from within, this is the way to do it.

I'm hoping that some rookie makes the "D" squad and tries so hard it galvanizes the entire corps of defenders a la Duchene.

When I first made the comment that Winnik was going to be our big summer move I was joking, guess I was right.

I think this is all unfair to Anderson. With the re-signing of Budaj and no signings of big name defensemen, Craig has to save our butts again. We might not even make the playoffs next year. Our offense has to be stellar! If we go in with Hannan-Quincey, Cumiskey-Foote, Liles-Wilson we will definitely fail.

Foote will be worse than last year. Quincey lost steam towards the end of the year, we have to hope he can pick up his game. Cumiskey, he's fast...that's it horrible on the defensive end. Hannan, ugh don't get me started(overpaid). Liles is a hard worker, but Sacco does not have much trust in him. And Wilson is fine with me because that position will be rotated with Shattenkirk, Cohen, Barrie, etc. Where does this leave us? With the worst defense in the league.

I would have loved to see the Avs move Hannan and Cumiskey or Liles. Then sign Martin or Volchenkov. I still want us to go after Mitchell, but we'll see.

We still haven't fit the need of a top LW and 2 good defensemen.

I love the idea of building from within, but sometimes you have to branch out. Look what happened when we got Mueller. He was great!

even if one of the rookies takes on a full-time roster spot our D will be average at best. not happy about that.

I read that two spots comment as 'I really hope a couple of our rookies play well in camp and an make the team'

If they weren't under the floor I'm 99% sure they would just go with the roster they have. Fortunately they are forced to sign a guy or two. We'll see who they decide on...

I would have liked to see the Avs get Volchenkov at the price NJ got him for, but other than that I'm fine with them sticking with the youth movement and developing talent from within.
