Nichlas Wallin the...

Hey Carolina fans, a quick question to throw your way. In light of Nichlas Wallin's new contract with SJS (2.5M/1yr) the debate has raged on amongst the Sharks fans regarding several factors. First and foremost, it is the general consensus that this contract is complete overpayment for the services that Wallin brings to the table; though some of you may disagree. Additionally, Wallin's ability to play has been called into question with specific references to whether or not he can be a capable Top4 dman while playing Top4 minutes.

So the question; in your eyes as fans, what was Nichlas Wallin to you?

Reliable 3rd pairing guy. Top 4 out of the question. He could fill in if need be, but I wouldn't rely on him to be a full time top 4 guy.

And yeah, I kind of laughed at the $$$ cause its overpayment, but then again, SJ is more expensive than Raleigh. So it might actually even out what we paid him.

I'm glad he's gone. I'd seriously rather triple the salary of Jay Harrison (worst player in the NHL) than sign Wallin to the deal he got. He's a #6 defenseman who is slow, extremely challenged with the puck and gets hurt all the time. The idea that he is going to be a "shutdown defenseman" in the Top 4 for the Sharks is insane. I feel bad for his defense partner.

Agree with everything imayagainknowanton said except for the part about Jay Harrison (the triple his salary part, not the worst player in NHL part.)

he's like glen wesley in his later years. you don't want him skating up and down the ice, but solid on the pk when he's guarding a small area.

15 minutes, 3rd pairing, 1st pk unit.

I don't think Wallin is even an NHLer anymore, if I'm being honest. Too slow and no hockey sense. If he hits you, it hurts, but the odds of that happening are close to nil these days.

I'd agree he is third-pairing, but he is defensively responsible most of the time. He's been around the block and has learned a thing or two, but he has certainly slowed. He's pretty safe and a stabilizing influence in his own end. If he can get into a position, he can shoot - he was famous for those OT winners in the 2002 playoffs. However, that was years ago now.

IMO he's no pylon, and he's a good team/character guy, but you did overpay I think.

He's the best defenseman our GM has ever drafted and developed (until McBain wins the calder and Norris this year). No seriously, he is.

sadly I'm pretty sure he's the only decent one too. Well, unless you were one of the few that considered Tanabe decent.

i always liked the secret weapon and thought he was underappreciated during his time with us.
he's typically steady, reliable and a good guy in the locker room too.
with that said, he's no better than a 5, maybe a big reach for a 4 dman.

I wasn't and he probably was the second best. Throw Carson in the mix for #2 as well. I can't imagine a team having less sucess with defenseman for 15 years, but when you make a concious effort not to draft d-men early, I guess that could happen.

Fun statistical analysis: Defenseman drafted by JR since becoming the Whalers GM through now have played 1,395 NHL games. Defenseman drafted by Brian Burke in his only year as Whaler GM have played 2,387 NHL games.

My god, I'd never thought about it that way.

Did Burke draft Pronger? That's an amazing (embarrassing) statistic. Let's hope McBain brings those numbers up.

Yes he did. He drafted Pronger, Marek Malik, and Nolan Pratt. The latter two weren't exactly great defenseman, but they each played over 500 games in the NHL.
