Defense

With the Mez trade defense could be the next objective?

Hedman- The future
Ohlund- The mentor
Walker- The steady d

Smaby, Lundin, Awol Ranger, Lashoff, Mihalik...this group has some depth but to really propel this team ahead TB will need to add to the top 3.

Still Available:

Coliacovo
Weaver
Kubina
Grebeshkov
Clark
Corvo
Mara
Mitchell
Bergeron
Exleby
Hnidy
Mottau
Jurcina

Trade Options:

Souray
Bieska
??? Who else

I wouldn't call Walker steady, actually If anything Leave Smaby on there if you want a Walker esque type of player. Hes cheaper and if unleashed will hit a lot a lot more.Lundin is a solid top 4 guy that can fill in on the top 2 if needed, though i wouldn't put him there ideally. Wishart looks like he has a spot out of camp for his to lose.

So far it looks like this IMO

Ohlund-Lundin/ufa
Hedman-Wishart/lundin/ufa
Smaby-Wishart/ufa/lashoff/Mihalik

Not look promising, one more key signing away, a guy that can legitimize our top 2 would be ideal.

Ohlund-Lundin
Hedman-Kubina
Walker-Smaby?

Assuming Lundin stays the course, that's a well rounded top 4. Pretty much anyone can take anyone else's place on a given night. Figuring Ranger returns anywhere near his past level of play, it'll improve them immensely.

There's no superstar #1 defenseman at present, but that's also where Tampa was at when they won the cup.

3rd pairing might be a bit too slow and weak on the puck for Boucher though. But we've got Wishart, Lashoff, etc.

It will be interesting to see how much Kubina gets. If you keep in mind that Meszaros was making 4 million, his number will likely reflect that.

In terms of still going the trade route, Vancouver does seem to have a surplus of defensemen now. Although Bieska comes to mind as potentially available, I'd think they'd be more willing to part with Sami Salo. It shouldn't happen unless we can at least get rid of Walker, but then that wouldn't make sense for Vancouver to do. Both Salo and Bieksa are also paid too much to be justifiably 3rd pairing D.

I figure we're about done with the defense for now. Barring a key trade.

Hedman and Lundin are going to grow a lot in this system.

Oh and you'll actually see one of Ohlund or Kubina actually be productive here, the exact opposite of what we're used to.

And how about this?

Kubina - Hedman
Ohlund - Lundin
Ranger - Lashoff

I think, Lashoff would be well in Boucher's system (1-3-1)

I think that Hedman will play top line minutes in the Boucher system becuase he is perfect for (and they pretty much pushed Foster out the door so he can play PP)

This is what I see

Hedman-Kubina(WTF with him on the left side, he is right handed)
Ohlund-Lundin
Walker-Wishart/Lashoff/Smaby

I didnt include Ranger becuase who knows if he will come back but if he does kick Walker out and put Ranger in his place.................Looking at that line up, i would say that Yzerman is done(not the strongest defence but no use wasting money on they defence left out in FA)

Right handed players on the left side isn't exactly an anomaly. It allows one timers from d to d passes.

And I think the lineup you have above will be right but I hope either ranger comes back or we sign one more guy so walker can play popcorn vendor. I wish we could trade him somehow.

I hope so Yzerman re-sign Paul Ranger and Paul should play in next season. Walker is good in defense, but weak in offense. We'll see in training camp. In my opinion, Lashoff would by ready to play in Tampa Bay.

(I put Kubina on left side, because I am also right handed player and from left side is good shot to goal. IMHO)

I could see Lashoff getting some attention because he can move the puck and the whole Guy Boucher system. I wouldn't mind him panning out with the whole trading him for a 2nd. Wishart should be on the team full time next season IMO. Ohlund, Hedman, Kubina, Wishart, Walker (can't see him being moved; no takers), and maybe Ranger as a top 6. Lashoff slides in the 7th. And I'm probably forgetting something obvious but I have a stomach ache so I don't care.

Edit: Lundin lol. Walker to the minors and Lundin in. Or if Ranger doesn't come back then in he goes. It looks decent on paper, up to Guy to make it work since I had confidence in last season's defense and was horribly let down.

I'd like to see either Walker play well, or get gone.

Unfortunately, with the amount of term left on his deal, we'd be potentially paying for his buyout until 2016.

MATT WALKER BUYOUT FROM CAPGEEK.COM
2010-2011: $688,889
2011-2012: $413,889
2012-2013: $313,889
2013-2014: $613,889
2014-2015: $613,889
2015-2016: $613,889

Yeah I was thinking buyout but wouldn't they have had to do it by now for this season?

Also the length of the buyout process sucks. But 600k in capspace isn't too bad when compared to 3 more seasons of walkers play :/

I can't think of anybody off the top of my head but perhaps we can find a team who needs depth at defense and has a forward on a similar contract as Walker. We need forwards and if Boogaard can get 4 years 1.6 per then Walker who can fight and actually has some hockey talent could bring back a forward.

Buyouts can continue to happen (15 days I think?) past a given team's last player arbitration. We're too early into free agency for anyone to have filed, but it'll probably happen. Meaning it can happen well into August.

The Bruins did a thing a few years ago with Dennis Wideman, where they had verbally agreed to a contract, but filed for arbitration anyway. Once the day of the hearing was supposed to have happened, they signed the deal.

It gave Boston the opportunity to first shop, but eventually buy out Glen Murray IIRC.

here are my updated Defence line combo's with Clark involved

Hedman-Kubina
Ohlund-Lundin
Clark-Ranger

I really think that Ranger comes back now but if not Wishart/Smaby/Lashoff will take his spot

Clark is basically a better version of Walker

It's look like that Walker will be traded or buyout.
Lashoff or Wishart can be 7th Dmen.

Or you know if we don't waive him... let him become an enforcer of sorts. Scratch him most nights, only dress him when absolutely necessary. No big deal on the cap space.

I think you mean that Clark is a better option than Walker, because Clark plays more like Lundin than Walker.

I could dig that, although I'd call up Fritz for any Rangers games (Boogaard).

I'm sure Rick Wilson can still screw it up. I'm not happy with the defense until Rick Wilson is gone.
