What about keeping Walker around and letting him bang bodies on the 4th line? I think he played some forward when he was in St Louis...Unless we can find a trade partner, I think that's the next best option before waiving him to Norfolk or buying him out.
While it seems that Yzerman wants defenseman Paul Ranger in the fold, he is proceeding like the team will go forward without him. Yzerman said he has had contact with Ranger’s agent, but that, “the player’s future has not been nailed down.”
Coach Boucher talked about the Ranger situation in Tampa’s Creative Loafing: “We feel that he is a guy that is definitely a solid defenseman who can help our squad. It always depends on where he is in his life right now. We will find out in the coming months how he feels and if he is ready to come back. We are not here to push people. I think the worst thing you can do in circumstances like that is make speculations on how he feels and what he wants. So we are patient in this case.”
I have a feeling Ranger will abruptly retire at some point in the near future, and probably without giving any real reason why (like Chad Kilger did a few years ago after being traded to Florida).
It's very strange that, after all this time, there still hasn't been hardly news regarding his status with the team (besides being an RFA). It's been about 8-9 month's since his LOA, yet nothing's really changed.
It would be nice to see TB add one more offensive puck moving d-man!
Who is available?
Trade for Carle from Philly? for a 9th rounder...SY seems to have Holmgrens number!
Trade for Bieksa, Erhoff or Salo
Trade for Giordiano
Trade for Kaberle
If those were the options, I would just go for grebeshkov on a 2 year deal...Assuming he accepts, we don't give up any assets, get a young guy and if he doesn't work out, it's a small term and his contract expires when Hedman needs a new contract. In the real world though, I don't think Grebeshkov is looking for a 2 year deal.
I'd love to have Ehrhoff. But he isn't a bottom pairing guy and we still gotta remember were building with the youth we have, not getting veterans to plug holes that the youth can fill just as good and are on 1 year deals (Lashoff, Smaby, Lundin)
