He and Kovy are playing chicken. Dean knows he is in the best spot out of all NHL teams, Kovy is interested in LA, no one else can come close to his demands, and the Kings are waiting to catch him should he fall. Kovalchuk is just being stubborn with his numbers. Someone has to fold eventually. My only concern would be Dean's patience with the whole situation.

Do you seriously think Kovalchuk is asking for 10 million a year? That's ridiculous.

I'm quite confident that Dean can out wait anyone in the world. He's not going to move much and I honestly believe that Kovalchuk is the one that needs to move the most with his demands.

I believe that could have been the opening bid from his agent.

I think he was saying that Dean will have way too much patience in this situation and it might cause us to lose out on Kovy because of it. At least, that's how I took that part of the post.

Ridiculous cuz he doesn't deserve 10 million a year? Crosby & Ovechkin don't make 10 a year man, Kovalchuk is work 7-8, 8.5 MAX.. Lombardi is probably offering between 7-8

I have a feeling if Kovalchuk dicks with him too long, he is going to question Kovalchuk's commitment and make that trade for Gagne or something. Dean has several other options. If Kovy sits around and doesn't budge off his numbers, Dean may not have the patience to watch every other available forward in the league swap around while he is goofing off with Kovalchuk.

Welp, I am off to have a good day, hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised to return to Kovalchuk in a Kings sweater.

Wow, the Kings would have the most fragile wingers in the league. Williams, Smyth and Gagne. They may not even get to 82 games combined.

If Lombardi dealt for Gagne, that would pretty much be the end of the Kovalchuk talk. After Gagne, Kovy would only enter the picture if the Kings somehow got rid of both Smyth and Williams to free $$ space.

Well, only Dean knows if there is still a chance with Kovalchuk.

If Gagne becomes available for prospects and picks, you make the trade and tell Kovalchuk, "Good luck finding a team in the NHL". You can't let a player hold you hostage from making other deals to improve your team.

I'm neutral now.

Basically, DL is either going to lose the Kovalchuk sweepstakes and be ridiculously outbid - which would be a good thing - and make a trade with the Flyers, or just move on if Camp Kovy still hasn't lessened their demands, which would again mean that we make a trade with the Flyers. (That's how Dean rolls, don't you know.)

We'll get one of Gagne or Hartnell (the former being injury prone and the latter being redundant with the likes of Smyth, Brown, Simmer, et al), then call it a day. He might even trade for a dman to fill up a spot, and have a Doughty contract extension to announce at the end of the day. Nothing to really get excited over.

At the end of the day, when Kovy either moves on to another team or signs in the KHL, and DL makes that very obvious trade, we will still be missing that dynamic sniper on the team, but have plenty of gritty character guys that might step it up and help us in the playoffs if they aren't injured or what have you.

I don't know. None of that seems exciting, but I'm sure it would make for a solid line-up in the regular season.
