Willie Mitchell

where do you think he will sign? how much do you think it will cost a team?

i wonder if he takes a one year flyer with a team to prove the concussions are not a factor (if they are in fact not)

I would kill to have Willie Mitchell on the Oilers. He is one of the best shut down guys in the league and by all accounts a classy guy. I would overpay bigtime to get him.

I am very happy with what the Canucks have done to the D but I am sad to lose Willie. He will probably sign a 1 year deal to show his value again. It's sad because he would have been looking at a nice long term contract with pretty good value. Look at what the other D men in the UFA pool got. Hope he finds a good home and stays healthy and has a good season.

I think his value is tied directly to his ability to prove he is healthy. If he can't, then he's going to be fielding one year deals at a amount, maybe even close to 2m. If he can, he could be in the 3-4m range.

Seems they've been a bit coy on testing.

I see him getting a 1.5-2.5 mil deal with bonuses attached (i believe he was on the IR > 100 days if you count the playoffs and i believe the CBA counts it but i can be wrong as i didn't read all the fine prints or the entire doc lol).

He might even resign with the 'nucks @ another hometown discount to be the 6th dman (i.e. 1 mil + bonuses) if the 'nucks trade 1 dman (KB is as good as gone come Sept) and waive another (for depth, i.e. Alberts as no one will likely pick him up).

Buffalo need some help on D, they have the cap space and are a decent team.

Willie has no value at all until he passes a physical. A thorough examination can turn up damage unpercieved by the patient. Who knows, until then?

Consider he has been working out for almost a month now and will start skating in 1-2 weeks, he should be fine come Aug to pass physical... question is how big of a hit is required to knock him out again.

Mg has said that if he is healthy(passes the examination)he would be intrested in Willie...and there are options..bonus laden contract due to a major injury(ie missed so many games)...he skates in about 2 weeks ....and i am sure they will sit down and talk...

I f he is able to go and if Bieksa is traded I still could see van resign him to a low contract and bonus laden contract....(then that would be the best defence in the league sans a #1 dman)

Classy guy where ever he ends up.

I am praying he comes to Buffalo. Just once it would be nice to get a legitimately good player in FA.

I'd like the Leafs to trade a D-man or two and sign this guy !!! 2.5 million per year for 2 years , he's a warrior ( if he's healthy , he's better than Komi )

I'm going to miss Willie a lot. The guy is such a class act and a positive influence in the locker room. Not to mention, when he's healthy the guy is completely solid back there. He will probably be a bargain because of that stupid hit by Malkin (which I am still very angry about), but if that hit never happened then the guy would be one of the best defenseman out there this free agency.

According to him he's healthy now and has been working out and if he is healthy then he'll be a great addition to any team. He was our best dman the year before and was last year too with Ehrhoff before he got injured. Hope he finds a good home.

If he would take a discount to re-sign with the Canucks, I'd be exstatic.

1 year $2.5M would be awesome. Assuming Bieksa hits the bricks ...

Ehrhoff - Hamhuis
Edler - Ballard
Salo - Mitchell
*O'Brien - *Alberts

Might be reaching

I wouldn't mind the Caps taking a flier on Mitchell with a one to two year deal in the 2-3m range. IF he can stay healthy he is a legit first pairing dman, but with his injury another hit might be his last.

Put Alberts on the minor and Rome up... more realistic as Rome is above Alberts in the depth chart (he was above KB3 too).

Insane to think the shut down pair from the first half of last season would be the 3rd pair in this case.

For that alone I don't see it happening lol

Injury and depth has a lot to do with it. Not to mention age. Even as a 3rd pair, on the 'nucks its not like they will only get 10 minutes. The number 1 pair will only get 20-25 minutes leaving the #3 pair with a good 15+ minutes... at least that's how we played last year.

Also with the depth, i expect Error's time to drop off and him taking more chances offensively (thus using more energy and reducing ice time). If you noticed, games where he played 25-30 minutes, he didn't take many chances to conserve energy (as he knew he needed to play a ton).

Pick and choose.

All 3 pairings are good enough to be switched around.

willie wont get a sniff of anything unless he can prove he is healthy......all as a result of campbell/bettman protecting the idiotic hits of the NHL like Malkins because he is a star....they meaning malkin/campbell/bettman may have actually all mutually ended mitchells career...

I'm a Canuck fan and having Willie out against the top line every game made me a lot comfortable when watching the game. Willie is a great teammate, person and player. IMO he's very underrated I hope Willie goes to a contending team and wins a cup because he deserves it.

It is very workable to have Mitchell even signed for 2 years.

How I see things turning out;

Mitchell: 2 years at $2,250,000 per year plus bonus for games played each year.
Raymond: 3 years: 2,000,000 - $2,500,000 - $3,000,000 (average $2,500,000.
Hansen: 2 years at $650,000
Bliznak: 1 year at $480,000 (2 way)
O'Brien: 2 years at $1,750,000

Bieksa traded with no salary directly coming back to the Canucks (OK if to Moose)

Alberts sent to Moose
Hodgson sent to Moose
Shirokov sent to Moose (likely first call up for injury)
No spare forward needed on Canuck roster (we have plenty of Moose rookies who can be called up without needing to clear waivers)

Canucks starting roster:

Daniel (6.1M) - Henrik (6.1M) - Samuelsson (2.5M)
Raymond (2.5M) - Kesler (5.0M) - Burrows (2.0M)
Hansen (650K) - Malhotra (2.5M) - Oreskovich (438K)
Glass (500K) - Bliznak (480K) - Rypien (550K)

Edler (3.25M) - Salo (3.5M)
Hamhuis (4.5M) - Ehrhoff (3.1M)
Mitchell (2.25M) - Ballard (4.2M)
O'Brien (1.75M) - Rome (544K)

Luongo (5.1M)
Schnieder (900K)

Total teal salaries: $58.4M

Not sure about money, but I would only offer him one year. With the concussion and all it seems like a big risk. I'd say 2 million, one year.
