Sign Lee Stempniak

He's from Buffalo

He's cheap

He can put up 20 goals

He can play as a second line winger

He had a solid stretch with Phoenix, and they have a similar style to ours.

Sounds like a good deal to me....So why not?

It's all about the $$

And I don't care if he's from Buffalo, I'm tired of that angle having any importance. All I care about is if he makes this team better.

I thought I read something about him not wanting to play in Buffalo because of the pressure of being from the area.

Maybe it was another Buffalo NHL player.

I could see it play out like this:

Vanek-Roy-Ennis
Stempniak-Connoly-Pomminville
Stafford- Hecht-Grier
Mccormick-Gaustad-Kaleta

Except I really want to Waive stafford to make room for younger players

God if that's true I want nothing to do with him. He's worried about the pressure of being a 2nd/3rd line winger in Buffalo?! Please...not the type we'd need.

Pass. A less talented Maxim Afinogenov. I'd be more confident handing that spot to a youngster like Kennedy. Some one that can play D and has potential to put up the same numbers.

I dont think it was him, it might have been Todd Marchant. It was one of them.

Hecht should not be playing center. For reasons why, see the last two seasons.

Agreed. Reunite HCP. Worked well last season.

As for Stempniak, I wouldn't mind him here but I don't know if there would be room for him. Stempniak belongs more in the top 6 and there just isn't enough room. He shouldn't be on a checking line or on a grinding line. With Ennis making the jump full time next year and Vanek moving to RW, we'd be better off picking up a 3rd line center instead of a top 6 winger.

Ennis-Roy-Vanek
Hecht-Connolly-Pominville
Kennedy-Belanger/Madden-Grier
McCormick-Gaustad-Kaleta

Stafford doesn't even fit into that lineup; don't see how Stemp would.

It's possible. He's been a 40+ point winger a few times and that at the right price could be intriguing. And if they were to move someone off the wing where they have a glut. But he's not a center and that is where they need the most help. It makes sense if they move another winger for center or defense help. If not, there isn't nearly as much benefit.

Eh. He isn't the first player to have a very good post-trade deadline surge with his new team. It does not mean he's going to keep it up long-term.

So he's not bigger, faster, more talented/productive or more physical than the guys they already have on the top 6 wings and they have a needs on defense and at center. They should look hard in other areas first. The local connection doesn't entice enough to make it worthwhile with their other holes.

Where's Kennedy in that lineup?

As someone else pointed out, Hecht does not excel at center the way he does at LW.

If Stempniak were added, it would be at the expense of an existing winger i.e. Stafford IMO. Also, Stempniak and Stafford are RWs, not LWs.

I was so pissed when they didn't sign Marchant in 2003, and I think he was receptive to the idea of coming home too.

And then 2 years ago they didn't even inquire about Orpik...

I had a legitimate argument with someone about who is better: Lee Stempniak or Patrick Kane.

I think Stempy is a very balanced attacker, Similar to a couple of guys we have already. He may not be better than what we have now, but he is definately a complimentary guy to Lindy's style/system... Sign him up - you know we're gonna have an injury a week into the season and need another forward anyhow...

What if we brought in Lee Stempniak?

I was recently thinking this team could use more offense to its game. Why not bring in a hometown boy that could score some goals. I mean he had like 14 goals in 18 games played with Phoenix, so why not? I think this is a guy Buffalo should look at for a good contract.

if we got rid of stafford stempniak could fill that spot but if ennis can do better that would throw stemp down to third line unless we moved hecht down, It would be a good signing because Ruff could juggle the lines with him instead of stafford
