Why Shelley?

Obviously Shelley's signing has created a flyerstorm of controversy.

Also, while many of you do not believe Holmgren has a clue, perhaps it would be interesting to speculate on why this player, this amount of money this long.

Speculation has centered on 1) Holmgren's an a$$ (or worse), 2) They want a tough guy, 3) They want more size

I have a different thought though. How about that they got Shelley to fill a role on Carter's line? Back in the day, the Flyers had a similar player to Carter in Rick MacLeish. He was a terrific goal scorer, but he only could play with 3 people, Bobby Clarke on the power play, Dorny and Ross Lonsberry. Dorny's role was to break the puck lose and go to the net on offense. Lonsberry was kind of like a holding midfielder in soccer.

Dornhoefer had a job and he did it very well, obstruct the goalie and clean up around net. It took courage in the days before helmets to run the boards and the crease. But he was there to make MacLeish successful (and the Flyers). Maybe the Flyers management see Shelley, after watching the last two games of the season, as someone in the same role, banging on the boards and staying within five feet of the net, letting Carter carry the play, as he likes to do. Don't know who their Lonsberry would be though. If it worked with Shelley potting 15 goals by cleaning up rebounds, then having a three year deal would be sweet for the Flyers.

Hey I am not suggesting that this is the reason. I am just wondering if this is a reason. It would be better if I had a way to cap broken oil wells in the Gulf, but this is what I got.

I am sure that Snider got all nostalgic after watching the HBO documentary and got all pissy that we didn't have a true heavyweight on the team. Then, without consulting Laviolette, he forced Homer to offer an insane contract for no reason. In short, we went from having an effective 4th line that could eat up 10 minutes a game and shutdown the opposing team to having a pedestrian, 1980s era 4th line that will see 4 minutes of ice time a game.

there is no reason to sign jody shelly at 1.1 million, when you could have signed asham for around .800, who is younger, a much better hockey player and fights as well. he's also very well liked by the team. this makes ABSOLUTELY no sense.

Because Shelley had one good game against us (his only 2 goals of the season) and Homer got a hard-** for him.

Because he's right handed.

That is the only even somewhat legitimate reason I can think of.
