Because they need a guy that has 2 first names, both being female names, so they can make fun of him?

We signed Shelley when we could have had Boogaard. Epic fail.

...seriously? Boogaard for $1.6M would be an even bigger disaster. We don't even need a 2 minute goon, nevermind paying them this much cash.

Doesn't Boogard have a bad back, and constantly injured?

Why Shelley?

So Colton Orr and other players like him don't go head hunting on Giroux, JVR, and other Flyers when we are leading games 4-1.

Cote will no longer be on this team and was a useless fighter that was getting paid not to win fights and to sit in the press box. Shelley will stick up for his teammates. And if you compare contracts with similar players to Shelley, you'll see his contract is right on par.

That's why.

I'm still not in love with the signing, but I'm slowly coming around. Hopefully we get Carcillo re-signed, too, and then we'll be a team no one wants to **** with.

Richards, Hartnell, Carcillo, Powe, Lappy, Betts, Pronger, Coburn, O'Donnell.

Those are people who can deal with anyone who wants to consider going after one of our guys. Literally, half our defense and at least one player on each line is capable of chucking knuckles or answering the call.

Shelley is not needed.

That's funny, none of them did it last season....

Richards was getting punked by Orr all over the ice.

And you like the trade off of Orr and Hartnell each going off for 5 minutes for fighting?

This fanbase has gone soft.

You're exaggerating just a tad, wouldn't you say? I mean, Coburn? Come on.

Lappy, Hartnell, and Pronger are all bad mofos, but Powe and Carcillo aren't even under contract yet. And Shelley is in another weight class that we'll help us out. Like I said, still wish we did other things with this money, but it's not the worst thing in the world to me anymore.

What happen to the fan base that embraced the Schultz's, Kelly's, Berube's, Big Sandy McCarthy's, Brasher's, Shelley's etc.

My god, I weep for this soft fanbase now that doesn't know the importance of these players role.

Bettman has killed what this fanbase once stood for.....toughness, heart, desire.

We would never had complained about signing a player like Shelley.

This is a sad day. Flyers fans are officially soft.

I'd rather see Shelley in the box for five with Orr/Boogy then anyone you listed...

Coburn and Kimmo had a totally different mentality come playoff time. I am hoping (along with a better part of the fanbase) that Coburn keeps up that attitude and regains the confidence he had before the puck-face incident.

Every indication says the team is resigning both Powe and Carcillo.

I see Shelley as a waste. The fanbase hasn't gone soft. We just don't want ******, one dimensional players on our team. It is a waste of a roster spot, of cap space, and of playing time.

It is a different game today than it was back then. You have to adapt or you are not going to see another cup.

A different game?

Yet every enforcer not named Laraque was signed on the 1st day of free agency.

When almost every team in the Eastern conference has an enforcer, you need one on your team.

Do any of you even watch hockey??

Jody is a tough physical player. He has excellent vision with a terrific shot. His passes are like Peter Forsbergs. He is a good two way player. He oozes hockey intelligence. His hockey sense is sick. His speed is blazing. When he is in the open ice the fans get up out of their seats.

He is a very underrated player. 1.1m was a steal to get Jody Shelley.

Kelley averaged between 20 and 50 points a year during his playing years.

With the Flyers, Schultz never had less than 21 points.

In McCarthy's time here, he played 71 games and had 12 points.

Chief had 37 points in 201 games.

Brashear had 57 points in 194 games.

Shelley has never had more than 10 points in a season since he turned pro (and only had 10 points once).

Different eras and games? Absolutely. In an era where you have to maximize every dollar you spend, every minute you give out in ice time, and every roster spot, Shelley is a waste.

Those old fellows could play hockey and enforce, it wasn't a give or take. The role evolved where the enforcers can't do much of anything outside of enforce. I don't want that uselessness on my team. If you think that's a detriment to the team, cool, you're entitled to your opinion. I beg to differ.

No salary cap = no whining about Shelley.

Salary cap means you need to be more intelligent about how you spend the money. $1.1M for a guy that will barely see the ice is a poor, poor use of resources.

Get me a guy who can take a regular shift for 82 games who will also take on the heavyweights and I'll gladly pay him that much. Shelley played 21 games, 7 minutes a game last year. A player like that is worth league minimum, at best.

Get me Carcillo with some size and I'll pay him $1.1M.

For me, it's not about going soft. It's about maximizing your cap dollars.

Exactly

Any doubter needs to go ask Jacket, Shark, and Ranger fans about Jody and they will tell you why he is The Superstar.

LOL

There are very few players like Colton Orr in this league. Maybe a handful of heavies who actually run guys and need to be challenged (and then only for distraction and to get them off the ice, because it's certainly not punishment). Orr, Boggie, Brash, and maybe a couple of others.

The most dangerous players in the league, by numbers and propensity to play dirty, are middle weights who NEVER fight a heavy.

Instead of pot, you should invest in a sarcasm detector.
