i have a feeling that if the devils do end up coughing up a good chunk of cash to kovy long term that they will end up regretting it, just my opinion...

Hopefully he makes his decision at a reasonable time. I hope its not something like 10:30 at night so we have to wait around all day.

Mirtle tweeted:

"If Kovalchuk's deciding today, have to believe it's likely the Devils or Islanders. No source on this, but I'd lean toward New Jersey."

Dirty? What's dirty about someone putting flowers around your neck when you arrive?

Thanks for doing this! I've been following it since the first time you posted it. I no longer had to refresh each person's twitter page to see if there was new info.

Also, this is feeling like the day we traded for him.

Hm, I was wondering why WFAN had in its update Kovalchuk expected to decide today...I'm kinda glad I only had a half day of work but now I'll be checking the computer the better part of the day. If a Rolston trade gets announced a couple hours before Kovy's decision though it'll be a dead giveaway as to who he decides

I feel the same way. I'm not sure if his style of play can fit into the Devils' philosophy long term, plus they may need to strip the team down eventually due to his contract. I know Parise and Kovalchuk can both be fit under the cap, but I'm afraid of getting into a situation like Tampa Bay a few years back when they had most of their money tied up in three players (Richards, St. Louis, Lecavalier) and were handcuffed when it came to the rest of the roster.

The Isles still need to spend 12M to reach the cap floor. Rolston and Huet to the Island (c5)

The Devils haven't negotiated publicly. They have been leak-free and never stopped trying to sign Kovalchuk.

Well, it looks like Kovalchuk may be a Devil. Wonder what the terms are.

Kovalchuk wants to win and he showed signs of the backchecking efforts necessary to play for the Devils. Johnny Mac will stress this and we may be able to turn him into a two-way force. Stress defense while giving him some slack offensively (along with the rest of the team) and maybe that'll work the best. Ovechkin hustles his ass when necessary on D and is rewarded with a ******** of offensive time and opportunity. Try it with Kovalchuk.

But what is the Devils philosophy now? I mean, we've seen a shift towards the offensive just with our staff alone. It's a younger staff, and they're more keen towards the offensive game. Maybe Kovalchuk fits into what the Devils are looking to become into the future. Tampa also didn't have a pipeline of NHL ready prospects. Fact of the matter is, there's another lockout looming in 3 years. It may just become irrelevant by then. We don't know, Marty's window is closing and he's 1 Cup behind Roy, and I want him to catch him. If Kovalchuk can help us get there, then more power to us.

PS: The world is probably ending in 2012, so, we won't even have to worry.

mirtle On the Devils: If Lou can deal a retired Vladimir Malakov for cap space, he certainly can move one of his current forwards to create room.

If you have your key pieces locked down long term, the rest can be fixed at the deadline. Let's just say that Lou signs IK and isn't capable of getting us a PMD, wich is a bigger need then another winger IMO, he can always acquire a rental just before the deadline cause his salary won't count as much on the cap.

This scenario isn't ideal cause we'd have to part ways with several prospects/ picks but we can't have it both ways, unfortunatly.

Remember, he did say that if Kovy makes less than 9M (cap hit) he will never post again on HF.
