Stars sign Brunnstrom (1 year, $675,000), avoid arbitration

Apparently Brunnstrum thinks he is do for a raise. He filed for Salary arbitration. If anything I figured the Stars would file it against him....

If he is awarded any kind of meaningful raise we should dump him now. If he isn't we need to really test him out and find what (if any) are his strengths. The first year he was a little flashy and had what looked like a developing scoring skill. Then last year he went completely flat with no sparkle or flash. Hopefully this year he will get on board, because I think there is a chance of him being a pretty decent 2nd or 3rd liner, but first he will need to improve drastically.

my guess is that his issue with his offer is the two-way part.

I think hes better on a team who can give him top 6 minutes. He can't thrive playing on 4th line minutes. Hes got the offensive talent I think, just needs the spot to put it to use, and sadly Dallas doesn't have room.

That's not exactly how arbitration works, but why wouldn't he think he deserves a small raise? Do you in your job never think you should be paid more? I certainly do, and I'm the one cutting my check.

What? Wait. No.

This is sports and entertainment; when we're talking about 6-7 figures, it becomes about production/merit not about being punctual and giving an A1 effort.

Too many guys get inflated raises for even the slightest improvements.

It's all relative.

Brunnstrom isn't looking for a raise so much as he is looking to mitigate the possibility of a pay cut. And there's the added bonus that he might get set free from this organization if the arbitrator goes wild.

I can't believe Brunnstrom would want to go to arbitration. He did not earn the money he was given. !st year was good with 17 goals, but 2 goals the next year? It should be a considerable decrease in pay. I think they should try and trade him with Ribeiro to Toronto for Kaberle, or any offensive defenceman. Last year I watched Richards and Modano on the point for our power play. Skillled players need to be closer to the net.

if the arbitrator comes anywhere near $1 million, let him walk. He isn't anywhere near worth it, however with a GM that severely overpays Barch who knows

I'm not sure the exact amount, but the Stars can't walk away unless the award is over a certain amount. In 2007 that amount was just over $1M, so today it's probably somewhere between' and $1.2M and $1,5M. And the odds are pretty low he will take a paycut from last season.

His qualifying offer was at least $918,750 (5% raise over last years $875k). I don't know how Dallas could justify anything less than that to an arbitrator, but I'm not completely sure how the arbitration rules work. But the Stars are probably going to be stuck with him at somewhere just north of $1M and won't be able to walk-away.

this is sort of like Antti Miettinen a few years ago. He was making the minimum and didn't deserve more. Stars qualified him at the $495k and he was awarded $885k in arbitration. Stars couldn't walk away from the award. No way we was worth the money.

With Player Elected Salary arbitration, I'm don't see any minimums in the CBA for what Dallas has to offer (I could be missing something). If it was club elected, they would have to offer him as much as he made last season. So it appears with player elected arbitration, Dallas could push for a pay cut. So, technically the only way he will be required to take a pay cut could be by arbitration. But based on past arbitration awards, the odds are pretty high he will get a raise.

If a pay cut was all he was worried about, he would have just accept his qualifying offer, which is at least 5% above last years salary (918,750). I did see that his qualifying offer amount is not allowed to be used as evidence at the hearing...

I hadn't thought about that. Although being a two-way deal shouldn't mean much at this point. It's hard to imagine any realistic scenario where he clears waivers.

If Ribeiro is traded, we should trade for youth that we can develop, not someone who will most likely leave after one season.

Richards was 2nd in power play points and assists... I think he was as close to the net as he needed to be.

I didn't catch that earlier, but, yeah, Richards is best on the point. That move, which should have been easily recognizable as a strength and a need, was instrumental in moving the 2008-2009 26th ranked PP to the 12th ranked PP.

Also, Modano did not run the point last season, rather he usually was on the half-wall. The points rotated a bit, but when Richards wasn't out there for a full two minutes, or damn near close to it, Daley, Niskanen or Robidas were the other guys in that position.

I don't know why they didn't try out Fistric, who has a cannon for a shot. Heh.

That's some person's sick idea of a joke, right? Surely the media would have picked up on it if it were true.
