Yup. It takes up a bit of precious cap space this year, some of it unexpected so early, but the outyears are great.
Green, Schultz, Alzner, Carlson. That's clearly McPhee's core for the defense going forward. The Caps do not see him as a third-pairing defenseman, and therein lies one's take on the deal. Washington thinks he is a top-four guy. If you don't, then it's high.
If Shultz is locked in at $2.75M for four years, that will be very good news. Not sure it will be popular, but I'd like it.
Agreed. Excellent news. This is what I wanted him to do last year around the 2M mark. But as always players desires may not have allowed it for so long.
Give today, that's a good deal for someone we expect to at worst be top 4.
I know others won't like it. And I respect their opinions. But I'm a fan of the kid. Just not overly enthusiastic til he puts some more qualties together.
Not a fan of Schultz and not a fan of the deal. They buy 3 UFA years which is a consideration, but that's a lot of money for a 3rd pairing dman.
To be spending $4.7 million on Schultz, Erskine and Sloan is criminal to me.
He's much more than a third pairing blueliner, but that's obviously my opinion versus yours. Tis a good deal, considering Schultz is only 24 and will get better. Hoped he would come in cheaper, but the combination of his league-leading +/- and the market prices this off-season probably pushed up his price.
What is nice is that's not bad for a #4 or so without offense in his game. Whatever offense he develops isn't required, but will be a bonus given that kind of contract. I already like his first pass.
A little high for me, but not disastrously, especially since I believe there's a UFA year in there.
This is a player that has gotten significantly better every year he's been in DC, and if he keeps on doing that, it's going to be a great deal in another year or two.

He's 24yo right now with a Feb '86 birthday; the first June 30 he's 27yo would be the summer of 2013. My math says it's 3 RFA seasons and 1 UFA season. And he will not have accrued 7 seasons prior to that summer.

10-11; 11-12; 12-13; 13-14
Wow. Ignore my prior post. I don't know where my head is right now. Thanks Sk8.

potentially.
he is still a kid at 24 and to date has 247 regular season games... still has tons of time to grow into his game and become better and could be a real bargain by the time he is 28
High for next year, I think, but on a 4 year deal it makes sense. I like it, I think.
Infinitely better than seeing them spend that kind of coin on Morrisonn, for example (not sure if they or any team would, but I can just imagine it happening )
