The Caps have re-signed restricted free agent Jeff Schultz, I'm told, and thus will avoid salary arbitration....

The team is expected to make a formal announcement this afternoon.

This should cap what Fleischmann can expect...hopefully...although anything more than a one-year deal would be giving UFA years. (Outside of arb. at least, I don't think there's much question who's the more valuable player to the team.)

Apples and oranges in some respects but I don't think Fleischmann should make more than Schultz next season. He probably will however.

Considering the risks of going to arbitration with Schultz (regardless of the low offensive output) this is a decent deal made better by getting another player they believe in locked in.

Man congrats to those of you calling for 2.5M... cause that's what he got this year.

I'm not a huge Sarge fan but that's a decent deal.

I was trying to formulate an opinion on Flash based on this contract. Similar to your thought on Flash making more than Sarge. But I just think the kid is going to go to arb and take the 3M he's going to get awarded.

Good deal fully approaving it. Solid minute eating top 4 defenseman looked up for 4 years.

The dman vs forward - scoring vs other stats issue makes it difficult to compare, as well as the 4 year contract including an UFA season vs the possibility of a 1 year contract.

I haven't pulled together an up to date comparables list for Fleischmann, but I know from a year ago, I had Hudler's actual arbitration results in mind...obviously with the playoff scoring to date being a difference with the 2 players and the caveat it was a year ago. Also, there are additional contracts that can be used by both sides vs what Detroit and Hudler and his agent had available. Note, Hudler's was a 2 year award. Fleischmann if it makes it to arb. can only be for 1 year since he's a year away from UFA.

Hudler's award: Year 1: $2,750,000 Year 2: $3,000,000

I don't see any reason why the Schultz contract ought to have any bearing on a RFA forward's contract.

The two forwards with one another, maybe so.

Just guessing, I'd expect the Caps to ink Fehr to term, and for Fleischmann to go through with arbitration. Makfi makes Flash cry.

Looking at some of the $2.0-$3.0 million dmen from last year, I like this deal a bit less.

If you're interested

Toby Enstrom only makes $3M? That's a team-friendly contract.

I still like it. I'd rather have him than either Corvo or Pothier who are both right there in terms of cap hit. Certainly better than paying 3.5 just to be given the Finger

That was his salary last season, he has a 4 year escalating contract (500,000 more per season) with a cap hit of $3.75M; last year was year 1 of the contract at $3M salary.

Drake agree about F vs dmen, tried to say the same in my longer post; only relevance is as it relates to overall team contract structure.

It'd be helpful if there were a way to isolate the guys that had signed recently. Many of those that are better than Schultz were signed in a much tighter cap environment, so it doesn't surprise me and it doesn't really bother me either.

Congrats to the kid, he hit the jackpot.

But I dont like the deal very much, as it seems a bit high for a young unproven in the playoffs defensive dman. He looked shaky and nervous versus Monty to me, and did little to help out Green when he got in trouble. I think his development while constantly moving forward, has been at a slow rate, expected of course for a guy of his size.

We have set the stage for our top 4 going forward, but there isnt a physical player in the lot, making us one dimensional. Maybe Sarge will start hitting, heck he finally pounded someone that tried to go wide on him in game 7. Thats the first time I ever saw him even try that. But then he got a wild hair up his arse and tried again and missed, and was forced to take a tripping penalty.

If it was a sign of things to come, then I will certainly appreciate this deal more than today.

It would also be helpful if there were a sortable DB by cap hit. I'm looking at you capgeek.

You can do that, but only for the top 50 at each position. Here is the one for top salaries for defensemen...

http://www.capgeek.com/leaders.php?t...max_results=50

You can change the options in the drop downs at the top of the table.

According to my Caps mobile alert, Jeff Schultz lead the team in blocked shots last year.

That's depressing.

Don't know what to think. Schultz had a great year, but it was his one and only good year and he gets a ~$2mil raise. On the other hand, if his play keeps progressing it might turn out to be a great signing.

Decent... probably close to the best that the Caps could do, given those +50 stats...
