I guess it would depend on who was running the hockey pool. For the one I'm in, the owner keeps Nabokov on his roster. Unfortunately keeping him also takes up a roster space, that they could use for another player. With Nabby signing a long-term deal, my friend will probably just release him before our fall draft.

The market for goalies just isn't the same anymore.
It's too bad because he's a proven goaltender that simply had trouble in the offseason. And to be fair, his whole ****ing team always had trouble not choking in the playoffs.
I'll wish him the best of luck. He'll be close to home and paid quite generously for being the #1 goaltender in that league.

A few years, meaning the last 3 or the last decade?

I don't know what Halak was thinking.

I rather live in gorgeous St. Petersburg Russia and make 24 Million with little taxes than St. Freakin' Louis for half the money.

So?

All the power to them. It's good for the game of hockey to have strong leagues in Europe. I don't personally care if the NHL has absolutely every top tier talent. Like any other situation, it will be a case by case basis.

Bingo. People need to get over this whole "waaa hockey is sacred" BS. It's delusional.

Why wouldn't a guy take 10 or so million dollars more and play someone else? Anyone who says they'd turn down 10 million freaking dollars extra is lying.

This isn't signing with one team for a couple hundred thousand. He probably got near on double the money he would have got in the NHL.

Good for him. I'd do the same.

That's why I came to this thread. You think that's bad...Check this out.

I'm in a full keeper league with salary cap. Someone just signed him to a 4 year deal at 5.5M per year (Cap of 40M). There is no releasing in our pool. So he just signed a guy for 4 years that will never play a game for him. The funniest part is there was a huge bidding war for him. I just checked and his only other goalie is Corey Crawford...YIPES!

Especially at Nabokov's age when he doesn't really need to think about what happens down the road. For Halak, better to work towards a 15-year career with secure pay and benefits and all that, even if the present day salary is lower.

Besides, if a Slovak counts as an import in the KHL, there is less incentive for a team to offer him that kind of money anyway.
