Official 2010-2011 College Hockey Thread

It's starting to hit that dead point of the year where free agency and the draft are behind us and the season slowly is coming around the horizon. And that only means one thing - it's almost college hockey time! Frankly the college hockey section on HF is a dead zone filled with posts made from knowledge-less Canadian fans wondering why their prospects aren't producing in this game we call NCAA hockey, so let's get it going here instead. Everyone has a team, so whether you cheer for an animal, Native American or even the mythical Seawolf, let's keep it here and let's keep it clean.

Reallyreallyfast WCHA Offseason News That Comes Off The Top Of My Head:
-Captain Ryan McDonagh has left Wisconsin to sign a pro contract with the New York Rangers. The defensemen is joining Cody Goloubef, Brendan Smith and Derek Stepan in leaving the national runners-up early.

-Despite it previously being a joke, Alaska-Anchorage now can finish worse than 10th.

-Minnesota will be hosting the 2012 West Regional at the Xcel Energy Center; making it four consecutive years where the team will be hosting one aspect of the Frozen Four. Other hosts in 2012 are Holy Cross (Woostah), Yale/Fairfield (Bridgeport, CT) and Michigan Tech (Green Bay, WI) and Alabama-Huntsville (Tampa Bay, FL)

-Mankato State freshman Tyler Pitlick has left the team for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL. Also they are not the only team with the Mavericks nickname in the WCHA.

-That other team with the Mavericks nickname is the University of Nebraska-Omaha who are coached by Dean Blais.

-Colorado College freshman Jaden Schwartz was the highest-selected player with college ties in last month's NHL Entry Draft. Schwartz was selected 14th overall by the St. Louis Blues.

-The BREC has to almost be done by now. At least I think so.

-Minnesota-Duluth junior Justin Fontaine has been invited to the Wild's prospect camp

-Michigan Tech is well-liked by all and still claim ownership to the MacNaughton.

-North Dakota had two incoming freshman picked in the first round of last month's NHL entry draft; one of two college to do so. Defenseman Derek Forbort was selected 15th by the Los Angeles Kings while Forward Brock Nelson was selected 30th by the New York Islanders.

-Denver University had someone good leave. Or at least I hope so.

-St. Cloud State won a NCAA Tournament game! Yes it didn't happen during the off-season but that's a big enough story where it needs to be placed here. Seriously, they won a tournament game!

You have to like the Gophers incoming freshman class this year.

Side note on the incoming class though, it will NOT include Seth Ambroz this year. He has decided to put off College 1yr, and will spend another season in the USHL before joining the Gophers in 2011.

No mind though, the incoming freshman class is STILL big for this team with the likes of Bjugstad, Gardiner, Holl, Haula and Schmidt.

Gardiner and Bjugstad will bring in some much needed and more than welcome size to the lineup.

There is a Frenchman named Just Fontaine who set the record for most goals in a single World Cup with 13 back in 1958.

If anybody could get a list of the incoming freshmen this year, that would be great.

As far as I know, this is the list:

D - Mark Alt
D - Nate Schmidt
D - Jake Parenteau
F - Erik Haula
F - Nick Bjugstad
F - Nate Condon
F - Jared Larson
F - Tom Serratore

Unless someone leaves before the start of the season, I think Holl and Gardiner are going to the USHL. The roster usually comes out around now on Gophersports.com, so we should know for sure pretty soon.

I do, although the problem is that I always like the freshman class. They've been a top-three national class four of the last five years.

-North Dakota gets a commit from Rocco Grimaldi.

-Chris Luongo takes over for Danton Cole as Alabama-Huntsville's head coach.

-Would later scholarship offer date hurt D-1 hockey?

I only noticed because I looked to see who they were bringing in at goalie to replace Hjelle, but Hjelle was still there. Any word on who will replace him on the roster? Heisenberg has Matt McNeely as a 2011 recruit, and since he's going to be a high school senior, he can't come in early.

Yeah it sure is! I have been so busy with other things I had not known that myself. I've been looking around the web to see who the Dogs have now to play goal, and not really seeing anything.

Bad news for Ben Marshall and Minnesota. Seriously, there's bad voodoo with anyone related to that program.

Why Ambroz is not coming in this season. It's a risk either way, but if the PP sucks again then there will be pitchforks and torches raised over this decision.
