Value Of Ryan Smyth

Hello everyone, Oiler fan here coming in peace. The last little while on the Oilers board there's been a discussion about Ryan Smyth and kind of dreaming of him returning to Edmonton as alot of us were shattered when he got traded in 07. Would Ryan Smyth be available in a trade? And what would the Oilers have to offer to get your attention.

If the Kings miss out on Kovalchuk I think we are better off just keeping Smyth and then buying him out next season.

If trading him would free up the space to sign Kovalchuk, I assume the Kings would not want very much as the Oilers would be doing the Kings a massive favor taking on that cap hit, as not many teams can absorb a $6.2 mill cap hit for a 34 year old 2nd liner.

There are other problems though, for one Smyth has a NTC and would he move it to go a rebuilding team?

And also it would not look good league wide if DL again traded a player to Edmonton a year after he got him to waive his NTC and come to LA. Just like he sent you guys Visnovsky a year after signing him to a long term contract.

Unfortunately as with guys like Souray, Campbell, Redden etc, its just not easy to move a bad contract, for many different reasons. I think DL is just going to have to live with this contract.

The only reason to move him would be if we were up against the cap which, barring the signing of Kovalchuk, we won't be for a while.

Hemsky would be mighty steep, would Cogliano + a 2011 draft pick be possible?

We have no use for Cogliano, sorry.

If the Kings had Kovalchuk locked up they would be all over a Smyth for Cogs trade.

But since Kovalchuk still seems like a long shot, Smyth in 2010-2011 is a better fit than Cogs.

This could be a wild card. If Smyth was asked to waive his NTC for Edmonton, it would be a homecoming for him and he'd almost undoubtedly be named team captain to help lead the young players there to become true and established NHLers.

You don't think the Kings would exchange Ilya Kovalchuk and Andrew Cogliano for Ryan Smyth?

Cogliano did have a rough season but had 18 goals his first two seasons in the league and he just turned 23, and is one of the best skaters in the NHL.

Plus like Yukon said, Edmonton might be the only team capable of taking on Smyth's contract that he would agree to waive his NTC.

Why would we need to move anyone though? Even if we sign Kovalchuk we'll have cap space available for at least another season. As a last resort if the Kings were up against the cap and could potentially lose a young core guy, sure, they'd take any offer they could find. Dumping him to Edmonton for a player we don't need while we still can afford him is not a good move. Even if we do sign Kovy we still need people capable of playing left wing on the other lines.

It's not about this coming season, its about 2011-2012 when Doughty, JJ, Simmonds and Bernier's new contracts all start.

Kovy Kopi Hemsky
Smyth Savard Brown

DD Scuds
JJ Kaberle/Schenn

Could see this happening....We could make the trades.

If we don't get Kovy though that's one big glaring hole.

I could see Smyth going back to the oil, was wanting to trade Williams for Hemsky though.

If we get a scoring winger.........
and someone would ask me, you could have him at the end of the season for a 2nd rounder or something.
Right now his salary isn't hurting and we would have top replace 25 of his goals

The Kings, who are packed with outstanding young defensive prospects, have a player named Colten Teubert who would look amazing in Edmonton in the future. Could a Hemsky or Penner for Teubert deal make sense for both teams? Absolutely!
This from an Oilers writer. Do it Dean!

To Oilers:

Smyth 6.25M (has NMC)
Williams 3.5M

To Kings:

Penner 4.25M
Souray 5.4M
Peckham RFA

I'm probably in the minority in this but I would do this deal.

I'm thinking we would need a big body on our LW which Penner would fulfill.

We really don't have any other players that can fill the void if Smyth is traded.

Of course, who wouldn't.

But then we'd have to throw in a Schenn or someone close to compensate for Hemsky.

Smyth isn't going anywhere. He has two years left and has done a good job with the Kings. He's great in the locker room and has a NTC. Dean is oldschool. He won't ask him to waive it nor would he buy him out.
