...right, so it isn't so simple to hide from the last couple of years of that contract if Pronger decides it's time to hang 'em up.

It depends. When out of the gates it was obvious that LA was the odds-on favorite they were ok with him leaving. When it came out that he had "signed" in Jersey (thanks NY Post!) they got very excited about having him. Then that report was proven false and it looked like he was going to LA, and they decided they didn't need him and were better off without him. Now all of a sudden it's a great move again.

The Devs had that issue with Mogilny, and got a completely BS ruling. Mogilny had a "chronic hip problem" at the time of his signing with the Devs. Well, when he was sucking and wanted to retire... they cited the hip injury as a reason to LTIR him and get out of his cap hit. Well, no **** he had a hip problem... it was a friggin chronic injury (dating to when he was with Toronto) at the time of the signing!
the Devils were able to send Mogilny and Dan Mcgillis to the AHL, Mogilny was so bad he was healthy scrarched in the AHL for a good portian of the season
Of course there was the Malakhov fiasco the year before that

More exactly he'd be Rathje'd and become an albatross around Homer's neck... He would hamper the Flyers at the Trade Deadline and tie up the injured player contract relief as they would not be allowed to build on it for the season-- I understand that I didn't word that very well... you either know what I'm saying or you don't. It is complicated to explain.

What was the deal with him being in the AHL? Cuz technically that shouldn't avoid the cap hit on a 35+... I do remember him being down there, and the next summer they got him cleared to just go to LTIR (the 2nd year of a two year contract).

Deal rumor expanded to include Harnell and Quick... To me I don't like giving up both Gagne and Hartnell. It does work better under the Cap as Gagne and Qick/Williams is pretty much a wash... so we lose Hartnell's $4.2M and have our goalie. Williams has not been a Quality player for a few years now, IMO and is not a replacement for Gagne and doesn't do what Harts can do -- see the SCFs and 2008-2009 -- But Powe can be signed and Cote/Boucher waived and they should be Cap compliant and have a full roster.

In the end does that make the Flyers a better team? I suppose Quick would determine that... It makes much more sense, but I'm still not buying it at this point.
So we get Quick and the porcelein doll in Williams for Gagne and Hartnell? Obviously Quick makes the deal since Williams is a skating mummy. I liked Williams before Hitchcock ran him out of town and he went on to be a productive player on the Stanley Cup winning Canes team. If we thought Gagne was injury prone well I don't know what you can term Williams....I would think that the Flyers would get a pick as well if they do trade Gagne and Hartnell. Once again I wouldn't mind keeping Hartnell if he wasn't overpaid! Another Lupul type of unload if this trade goes through. Whatever....the fact is Leighton needs more competition than just Boucher and Backlund!

Well, the insinuation and difference there was that Hatcher could (probably) have still been playing if he and the organization really wanted to... whereas Rathje was legitimately injured to the point where he couldn't play.

if it is to Tampa it better be one hell of a return. LA has gotta be at their most desperate for someone like Gagne, and as soon as Kovalchuk signs in Jersey Homer jettisons him off to Tampa? That makes no sense. Ever hear of a bidding war? Negotiation? God dam it I hate Homer.

I understand what you are saying there in that sense... And Rathje made a preseason attempt to no avail, so he was out for sure... With Hatcher I seriously doubt he could have played; he hoped to play down the stretch but from what I understand he was playing with bone on bone and in great pain. It is a moot point though as we will never know for sure what could have been.

Oh, his knee was clearly terrible... but it had been terrible for at least a full season at that point and he'd been "effective" enough to go out there and play his shifts.

He was put on waivers and he cleared. of course there were rumors that Mogilny had not recovered from a hip injury the prior season and they were hiding his salary. I think thats why Mcgillis was down there as well. I think Lou had found a loophole in the CBA in 2005. Not sure if that 35+ rule was in effect that season and possibilly might be the reason why that CBA rule has been closed since then. If its not that I may have to do some more digging.

Yeah, they probably changed that rule after that season (they changed a bunch of little things in the CBA that season)... that would make sense.
